Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like crit chance and PvE Damage.

For example, a weapon with the upgrade template that ends in % will suffer 3% attack damage every time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

Item upgrading costs crests and the current level of the item. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, weapons and armor to provide them with a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades also come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot for them. The item must be at least upgraded to the blue level for a component to be inserted. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and Enrichments are type of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item upgrades it's used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to make stronger versions of the equipment that require the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A boost upgrade is a way to alter the defense or attack properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them in the cash shop, or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher tier version of an item will be dropped during the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their equipment even if they are unsure how much it will be improved after the reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be expensive, and there is a high possibility that the item will be obsolete or even break when it fails. A failure to upgrade can destroy Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items that can increase or even eliminate the possibility of failure, and a few upgrades that give an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to enhance the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets that are specifically designed for. Glyphs increase the effectiveness of all nodes in the area around them and include pre-existing affixes to equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in various ways, and we recommend getting them to level 15 as soon as possible.

You will often find in the final game that placing Glyphs is the most effective method to upgrade your gear. They are the only upgrade component that can be upgraded directly to level 15 and provide significant boosts to your power and radius on the Paragon Board, enabling you to get higher nodes more quickly.

The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without restriction. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires the use of a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and re-place.

Each Glyph has a particular range of values that can enhance a stat by. The value is shown when you select the Glyph in your inventory. You can decide to replace it with a Glyph of the same rank, or a higher rank, which will increase the value of the glyph.

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools and also during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt has the chance of dropping one of the various Glyphs, and there are also a few rare glyphs to be obtained as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

Once you have the desired Glyphs then you have to put them on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a bonus that will boost the stats of a specific set of nodes within a radius around the Glyph. It can be +40 for one of your primary stats or +25 for two of your secondary stats, based on the Glyph.

Glyphs will boost all nodes connected to them, so it is best to place Glyphs in the most important spots on the Graph. This will increase the impact. For instance, a Druid should aim to place their Glyphs near their primary damage nodes, but you should also consider placing them near critical damage nodes too.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to improve the stats of specific items by putting upgraded components in them. This is commonly known as "upping". Every upgradeable item has a level, which determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items are able to be leveled up to a maximum of 385 ilvl. Each item level requires a different number of components to be reached, and the upgrade costs increase as the item gets upgraded.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab of the crafting table. Each Upgrade Recipe completed will result in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to level up the item upgrader mod, and when enough are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a different item of the same type. This means that the same armor piece will become the form of a shield or weapon when upgraded. The new item also has its own bonus. This could be a drawback, as it can make the item more expensive, even if you don't require it.

All items can be upgraded up to five times, except for hero gear, which can have eight upgrades. Each when you upgrade an item it has an opportunity to fail. The rate of failure increases as you go over the maximum amount of upgrades. Failures can result in the item reverting to its original condition and the player having to purchase more resources than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item fails to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. In addition, the item will lose any bonus it earned such as crit chance and attack damage, and all other effects that are associated with that effect (for instance, a higher healing over time or speed of reload). However, the player may continue to use the weapon or armor following the failure.

If an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from the lowest to the highest. This means that, should a weapon gain an increase in its crit chance the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. Slots is a new attribute that has been added to the definitions of items. The value is calculated each time an upgrade occurs.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item level upgrade is based on its rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium products is equal to the base value of the upgrade--for example, a common equipment item could have five upgrades with a cost of 25600 Technology Points, 4x Quality Improvement Chance.
