A lot of our kids' bed beds can be converted into two beds that are complete which is ideal if you intend to let your children move to their own bedrooms in the near future. Pick from finishes such as brushed gray, creamy white and rich walnut.

Ladders and Stairs

You can choose between stairs or ladders when you are choosing bunk beds for children. Ladders are easy to install and are cheaper. They also offer an easy way to get into the top bunk bed. They are also considered to be safer than stairs, since they have a wider area for children to step on and a built-in handrail. Ladders also usually have grooves on the steps which help prevent slippage when climbing up or down the bed.

If you prefer the style and appearance of stairs, then they can make a more elegant addition for your bunk bed. Staircases are also suitable for rooms that are small on space, as they don't extend into the space like ladders do. They are typically made of wood or metal and can match various styles of bedrooms. Some staircases have integrated storage drawers. They are a great way to add more space to the bunk bed.

When deciding between a ladder and stairs it is important to consider the age of your child. While it is recommended that nobody sleep on the top bunk under the age of 6, older children who are comfortable with climbing vertically might be better off using stairs rather than a ladder. If you are planning to use your bunk bed to accommodate guests, like young children or adults who have limited mobility, it is best to use stairs.

A straight staircase on the side of the bed requires 95" of space on either side. If you don't have this much space, you can opt for a u-shaped stairs that doesn't need as much space, but provides a safe and secure way to access the top bunk. Certain beds let you remove the stairs when they are not being used. This reduces the size of the bed and makes it more suited to multi-purpose spaces. You can also find stairs that connect to the bottom of the bed. This eliminates the requirement for separate handrails and makes it easier to climb to the bottom for kids.

Guard Rails

Guard rails give children the confidence and freedom to climb in and out of bed independently. But they must be positioned correctly, ensuring that no gaps or loosening occurs between the rails that guard the bed frame. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines when installing guard rails and make sure to examine them regularly to ensure they are not loose or have holes that could cause trapping.

One of the most important safety concerns for bunk beds is to keep them free from electrical devices and other objects that could be projectiles when your kids bunk bed sale play or sleep. Be sure to place bunks away from windows, which could pose a fall risk when children climb up to the top floor.

You may want to install an evening light on the ladder to light the steps up and down if your child wakes at night to use the bathroom, or are awakened by the sound of a storm and are forced to leave their bedroom.

A safety net could be put up at the top of the bunk to stop children from falling out when they're sleeping or playing. This is a great idea especially for older children who tend to sleep on the top bunk.

Guardrails must be firmly attached to the bunk bed structure and not removed without the use of tools. The guardrail openings above the mattress base should not exceed 3.5 inches wide to avoid strangulation or entrapment. Place the wedge block as shown on Figure 1 in each opening of the uppermost guardrail member and over the mattress foundation. Then apply 33-lbf (147-N) force in a direction that is perpendicular to the plane of the larger end of the block and keep it there for 1 minute.

It's also a good idea to teach children not to hang things on the guardrails or ladder, like clothing, belts and sports equipment; instead a rack for clothes is recommended to ensure that these objects do not pose a strangulation danger for your child(ren). Be sure that no more than one child can sleep on the top bunk. This could lead to a dangerous imbalance and falls.

Mattresses

Consider the age and size of your child when choosing a mattress for bunk bed. A bunk mattress will last for at least eight years, or until siblings no longer share a bedroom and you'll need to select a mattress designed to expand with your child while still providing sufficient support as they grow older.

There are a variety of bunk mattress sizes. They are typically twin or full size. If your kiddos suffer from asthma or allergies choose an allergy-free mattress with a dust mite barrier and a moisture-wicking cover. Children are prone to lots of accidents and spills, which is why a mattress with an antimicrobial layer will keep the foam safe from harmful bacteria and germs.

Another factor to consider is the mattress's feel. Children typically weigh less than adults, which means they require an item that is firm, but also comfortable. A lot of hybrid and latex mattresses come with a firm and softer side to meet the needs of both children and adults.

Memory foam mattresses are good for kids, but we don't recommend them as they tend not to cool effectively and can be a strain on the spines of infant children. You should consider a hybrid or a latex mattress instead, which offer solid support and cooling infusions that will keep your child or guest sleeping cool and comfortable.

Low-profile mattresses are typically the best choice for bunk beds for children. They are designed to be slimmer than regular mattresses and maximize the height of the safety rails for the top bunk. They minimize "filler" material to provide premium quality with slim designs.

If your child wants to test a mattress that's more substantial than a standard mattress, think about an hybrid or innerspring mattress with upper comfort layers that can be removed or replaced as the child develops. These models can provide an idea of the mattress's durability as your child grows. You can also include a bed skirt or mattress pad to prevent it from sliding. Some beds have a an integrated lip or side rails to stop this from happening.

Storage

Bunk beds can be a great option to free up space in shared kid rooms. They can also be a cost-effective alternative to buying two separate single beds. Many bunks also provide the option of adding an trundle bed that can be hidden beneath the bottom bunk when it is not in use.

Consider putting up a kids bunkbed' bedroom furniture set that has desks, bookcases, and/or dressers to maximize storage and space in a bedroom with a bunk bed. This will allow you keep all of your child's clothes as well as toys and personal belongings in one place instead of stuffing everything into chests or closets that are overstuffed. These kids bedroom furniture sets are available from a variety of retailers and usually meet all federal safety standards.

Stacking bunks can provide an opportunity for creativity as kids furniture can transform the spaces below into secret spaces for play or cozy spaces. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked six bunks to create the ultimate kids' space. It can be used for sleeping, playing or even for superhero cape twirling. The room is decorated with bubble walls covered with Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the perfect escape.

If you aren't able to construct a staircase for your bunk bed that is stacked with kids the ladder could be an easy solution. They are constructed using a combination of Single Socket Tee, Flange and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings and can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between rungs of a ladder to make it easier for little ones to climb. The rungs of the ladder are also placed so that they are in line with the ground rather than above it, so that climbing is less intimidating.

Installing loft beds that can be raised to just above the floor is another way to maximize the space in the bunk bed room. This allows you to move desks, dressers or toy chests directly under the beds. This is a great method to maximize the space in smaller bedrooms or in large family homes where beds need to be sufficient for multiple people to sleep.
