Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

For example an item with the upgrade template that ends in % will take on 3% attack damage every time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

Components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armor and trinkets to give them a stat boost or to add an additional effect. These can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on devices that have slots. The item must be upgraded to blue level before the component can be applied. The player is able to have a maximum of five boost upgrades at a time; each upgrade increases the probability that a higher-level version of the item will appear in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of how much it will improve after a future reset.

The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process can be costly, and there is a substantial risk that the item may be obsolete or even break when it fails. A failure to upgrade can cause the destruction of the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to reduce or eliminate the risk of failure. Each level of an item requires different components, and the cost of upgrading increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab of a crafting table. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns several Technology Points. These points can be used to level up the item, and when enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When an individual player upgrades an item the original item will be replaced by the new item. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also comes with its own set of bonuses. This could be a problem, as it can make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and the number of upgrade slots.
