The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its stats base or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into more robust bases. Items with strong bases, like Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be used to upgrade item trinkets, weapons, armor and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or additional effect while the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as a reward from missions or chests. Some upgrades additionally have special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will need to select it and click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade stats and the necessary component or materials.

There are three types that are universal upgrades (which include gems), prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be placed in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear and legendary equipment are exactly the same as jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades, which can be placed in gathering tools, will include their name at the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding a Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph by another, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions. Gear is now categorized in tracks, and each item can be upgraded as many times before it's "leveled out." Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is a very important part of the game, and it can boost the strength, damage, or other attributes. For instance the No-mouth Face will require 1.1K Scrap Materials as well as 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards to upgrade. In general, weapons and armor have a higher trade value when fully updated.
