If the director said you have potential, that's a VERY good sign. I agree, if you can, take a drama class and hone your skills (I'm willing to bet you've got some natural acting skills, so this would just be to fine tune what you've already got
). Also, if no drama clases are being offered, you could always practice by putting on your own shows (force friends and family to watch, that's what they're there for...
)
A long time ago (when I was a student), I used to have problems with eye contact in speech class. How I ended up solving that was practicing my speeches in front of a mirror, making sure to look in my own eyes more than on my speech. Surprisingly, that worked, and I would, during speech time, randomly choose different memebrs of the audience and make eye contact. It brought my speech grade up from a C to an A- by the end of the semester. That might work for you too.
All and all, if acting is something you enjoy doing, keep it up., Practice makes perfect. Good luck!
