You know what happened? All of the characters in my mugen dissapeared! The data folder also dissapeared!   why

no I wasn't even at my house. My character folder is gone also. I was at my friends in cleveland Oh from fri-sat. when i got home i went to play mugen and I found no data folder and characters folder. I was so

what the fu*k my sprites for blackmanta are gone. he was almost finished. this is the worst day of my life. I had just about the whole screenpack full.

Sounds like somebody got on to your computer.  I remember about a year ago, my friend's mom made him go to church and his mom made friends with another woman who went to church so my friend had to take care of his mom's friends kids, and every single time they went on the computer they went and deleting some of his mugen characters. One of them was this special green ranger that could morph and I was begging him to send it to me, but he never did, he said he would but he was just too lazy.   
Well the damage has been done, but at least he's learned his lesson.

It's a longshot, but maybe a windows system restore could bring them back? Or would Windows skip over the filetypes?

Try doing a total search through your computer, if that doesn't tell you where the files are, then try what OrochiGill said.

You, like a countless number of hapless souls beforehand, have just learned a valuable lesson; the importance of creating back-ups.  Let's face it, computers aren't as reliable as some would lead you to believe, and their vulnerability is reason enough to take the necessary precautions.

I had the same problem as you, I lose my mugen  , I never knew what happened, but one day like half a year later, they re-appeared, in the same folder 

If your archives has been deleted, you could use a progam called tuneup utilities, it has a function to recover deleted files from the recycle bin

1) The government saw your mugen stash and with jelousy deleted it all.

2) Aliens hacked your computer and removed all "fun" content.

3) Someone near you deleted it and won't fess up to it.

I agree. All I can say is if I wrote a list of people in here that had lost their mugen stuff, I would be here all day.

Edit: ALthough I'd have to say that the weirdest thing that ever happened to my mugen was all the cmd files one time about 2 years ago went "Missing". It's a good thing I had all my chars backed up in like 3 different folders + Dvd's, or I would have been pissed.

if it's you mugen folder only then i guess this was intended 
see if anything els is missing from you hd.
or try recovery programs like (pci inspector file recovery) that one actually helped me once before.
it cant recover everything but at least something.

I can't stress this enlough, especially whem your own Mugen creations are on the line! I admit, I'm so retentive that I back up everything on another drive constantly when I work-- all sprites and work up to the most current point. When I was about to release my fist char (White Queen), the .cmd file suddenly corrupted on me. I had to redo the whole .cmd in a night. Since then, I always ensure my projects have back ups.

There's a variety of reasons things can get deleted. One of my computers (thankfully not the one I do my Mugen work on) has the odd habit of making files "dissapear" for awhile. Usually when I shut down and restart the computer, they come back. But I just figure my computer is odd though, and it has something to do with archive files.
