Want to learn Japanese
« on: October 24, 2007, 05:41:18 PM »
I can't find anywhere to learn where I live. Is there anywhere to do it online?

Thanks in advance!

Get Rosetta Stone. It's an online program that can teach you any language, including Japanese. It's very interactive and I've heard many good reviews about it from some of my friends. Actually, I was shown it one day by a former student of mine (I was teaching Japanese to a small group at the time) and I must admit if you use it right you can learn alot in a very short time.

The only thing I will advice you is to buy a good Japanese dictionary, for one of the complains I've gotten about it is that Rosetta Stone really doesn't have a reference to tell you what each Japanese word means on its own. It's the next best thing to having a real teacher (although I still think a real teacher is better than any language program....).

Sabaki gives you the best option above or you can learn it right here:

Lesson 1: "pronunciation"

We all know about consonants  (b,c,d,f...) and vowels (a,e,i...) , Japanese doesn't use consonants alone except for "n". So you don't have "k", you have "ka".

Ka  (Kah)
Ki (Key like you use in a door)
Ku (Keu)
Ke (Kaye)
Ko (Koh)

Practice these syllables for the next 24 hours.

How about “N”
Na (Naw)
Ni (Knee)
Nu (New)
Ne (Nae)
No (No!)

Been wanting to learn for the longes, but never really felt like sitting through a class as I like to move at my own pace...think I'll try that out. Plus, according to you it has alot of other different uses, thanks sabaki. I'll be trying Rosetta Stone. Arigato.

EDIT: Just did a bit of surfing...looks like EXACTLY what I needed!

A librarian recommended that to me once a few years ago. I might look into it.  :O*D

Thanks for your help. I'll get that program tomorrow (I'm going to bed soon). I mostly wanted to learn to understand what anime/videogame fighters say. I've tried to figure out some words before but I have always wanted to learn, speak a little and write in kanji.

Nothing serious, just for the fun of knowing more. ;D

No, I went back here to the states when school started. I'm going back next summer though, and I'm probably staying longer than summer since I won't be in shcool by then.  :)

That`s thee spirit!!!Besides some of the sounds might sound more complicated to do for anglosaxon language speakers(english for example)than latin-based languages speakers(eg.spanish)
Japanese has writing more complicated than speaking i believe, but i could be wrong(i doubt it :DxDie)

Here's some advice from someone else who's slowly been trying to learn Japanese:

1.) Buy a good english to Japanese dictioary (a particurally helpful dictionary is one that displays not only romanji, but also katakana and Kanji for each word). Ine of the best Japanese dictionaries I've seen is the 'Langenscheit Pocket Dictionary: Japanese.'.

2.) Immersion. I for instance listen to a lot of Japanese music, and have watched countless hours of Japanese programming. Subtitled shows are great in helping you pick up pronunciation, as well as quirks in the language, such as expressions. Live-action shows like DekaRanger help you to see how people use conversational Japanese. Also if you own any Anime DVD's, I would suggest shying away from the dub tracks and watching the original language. The more often you hear the languague in use, the more helpful it wil be in picking it up.

3.) If possible, take a class. If there's a community college in your area, look up their website and check their course catalogue to see if they are offering any classes. Often, the classrom setting is helpful in learning gramatical aspects of the languague. Sabaki's suggestion of a computer program s a good one, and one I might even consider as well.

I wish you lots of luck in your venture!

1 - Hard to find, but when I have the chance I will look for one.
2 - Check.
3 - Learning Japanese is nearly impossible in Argentina. :) I'll get Rosetta Stone when I can (Takes a long time to download from Emule, and it's unavailable in Argentina).

Again thanks for your help!
