Spider-man mugen game
« on: January 14, 2021, 11:29:02 AM »
Hey everyone, this isnt really finished, but i decided to release this as is for now, and maybe update this later

it is heavily inspired by Lethal Syndicate project which seems to be not releasing for a long time already
many different works by diffirent authors are used in this, my work was mostly to transfer, adjust and compile together some specials/hypers for the characters, merge different stages into one, more nice-looking. and also screenpack artworks, like lifebars and such i guess is solely mine work (but screenpack is build on top of Doorhenge's default MvsC screenpack also)

before you ask, there is no playble doc ock, kraven or hobgoblin in this, these are just placeholders for these characters, put there in advance because of how the screenpack works. hopefully they will be released someday. i started to update existing hobgoblin to new look, but dropped it, since it turned out to be too much work for pretty much the same character as green goblin

sound and custom palettes are also disabled, because i usually like default colors for characters and find capcom fighting games sounds a bit irritating
i was making this for myself after all, but
you can enable them, but there probably will be problems, since i didnt take different palettes and sounds into consideration when making this

this is also was put together only in a week or so, so dont expect greatest of quality, but i tried not to bring anything cheap
nothing great to the level of lethal syndicate also, but probably best version of spider-man nugen game for now on the web

all credit goes to original authors of the characters and stages
have fun everyone!

I think using the Animated Series game as title screen is a nice idea, but the artwork and colors are very different from your character select screen and pre-fight/character cards, which are more in line with MvC/MSH. If you really want to stick to it, I would suggest tracing over the TAS art or heavily edit it to match MvC highly saturated style (check https://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/mvc1-custom-portraits-thread-190805.0.html for some color and art references).

The text alignment is also very odd. "Spider-Man" is slightly to the left, and the screen requires our attention at the right side (and up and down as you scroll through the options), but if we select to start the game, then we have to shift our focus to mid-screen, while in conflict about whether we should appreciate the sprites (left side or right side) or the mini portraits in the middle... it's really off putting, specially if the game is to be played with 2 or more players.

Then when the fight starts, if we are playing solo, we have to focus on the left (player 1 side), giving us a zig-zag before the fight even starts. I see you had some nice ideas, possibly inspired by Lethal Syndicate, but they don't work well together here. Sometimes we have to drop sprite resources and ideas to preserve style and continuity.

For the select screen, I stand by good sprites, but I despise head swaps, edits or use without permission from the original author(s). Even if you are able to make sprites of your own for all characters (or get permission), I still think the idea is bad as grayscale takes 40% of the screen, not even Fatal Fury 3 did that. I think a modern Kakuge Yarou select screen with portraits is the way to go here... you will not be restricted by screen size or permission to use sprites.

If you dig it, Spider-man MS-DOS games have plenty of art like this:

...and there's no shortage of comic scans and DeviantArt around you may use as reference.

TAS Cartoon Maker and The Sinister Six are often overlooked sources too. They should be abandonware by now.

Btw, don't forget there's still Moon Knight, Symbiote and Spider-man 2099 out there...

The pre-fight/character cards is a nice idea, but I have seen it before in Lethal Syndicate (enlarged sprites, better resolution and comic panels for story mode). That was more than 10 years ago... so I would drop the idea or work harder to make it unique and raise the bar Wucash, Hob and PrimeOp left for us.

I understand these comments may be perceived as blunt and elitist, but it's best to have honest feedback than indifference.
I like to see spriters develop their skills, if I didn't care, I wouldn't still be around or reply to your post.

glad you guys liked it! especially pleasant to hear nice word from the creators!

@navs41
yeah, i have this feeling too, its 16bit colors vs improved arcade colors
thanks for the sources
i will look into this

regarding select i get what you saying about shifting attention. but well, i dont think i will go so deep into this to change stuff completely. i like the arrangement of things on select screen as it is now, even though during selection, attention-shifting can be off-putting, as you said... but honestly i would rather overlook that small inconvinience than drop some good sprites

(btw 1st version of select screen had no small portraits and names with 1p and 2p addition hovered over highlighted characters sprite. was more focused, but problem was that 2nd player bigport would overlap 1pname hover sometimes. and without 1p and 2p names over characters it was confusing, so i ultimately decided on adding small ports. also i like those small portraits in mugen, where all chars put together :-")

and versus screen is the same i use for my MSH and X-men games, they all use those 1.5scale high-to-low attack sprites to allow character transfer between games, and also im by no means trying to raise lethal syndicate bar, but, i guess, thanks for such a high vote of confidence! if i find some better idea, i will surely implement it, but i couldnt come up with anything so far without having to make new artwork for each character. maybe here its 16 characters, but in my MSH and X-men games its 100+ combined, with me often changing, adding and removing things, so thats just the easiest and prettiest way to do it that i found. and lets be real, in terms of sprites we are still barely scratching the bar of 1994 capcom games, so i personally dont see anything wrong with doing stuff the old way ;)

in general it is nothing like a project or anything, just a quick thing for people to have spider-man game, only reason i included characters is because regular versions with default ports wont work with this, and i guess i added some new moves to 4 characters in the process. thats maybe it gives a feeling that it should be more unique or comlpex than it is. and btw im still hoping lethal syndicate will release someday, making this thing obsolete

ps. i debated to include some additional characters, but those the ones i ultimately decided as representation of 90s tas (my introduction to spiderman =P~). symbiote spider-man also included btw, if you go up from regular spider-man, as well as carnage, down from venom

but thanks for advices, i will keep it in mind if i will work on this further

a little (or moderate) update to this:

-Hobgoblin by DARKTALBAIN, SusanMugen, Acey and Tombstone by Dev, Arkady updated and added (Hobgoblin head sprite by Sir_Ghostler)
-new versus screen with MvC portraits (some are old, some are updated, some are completely new, Rhino port is based on art by Thuddleston)
-same Hyper BG, hitsparks, dash, superjump, etc fx for all characters (not 100%, but most of it)
-more or less balanced damage
-not exactly the "same" AI, but tweaked to be at a pretty close level, with only Black Cat staying untouched (a little weaker that the rest, to be 1st match in arcade), and symbiote characters being slightly stronger
-symbiote characters select portraits had to be moved off-screen (boss characters, and no space on the main screen)
-added chameleon death animation for mirror matches (similar to how mysterio was used in lethal syndicate)
-still no sound. sorry guys, since i dont use it, just cant bring myself to do it

thanks, Dev!
man, your Shaw is completely sprited already, as far as i looked, it is really tempting that it should be done, gotta be honest. with little portion of the work left, and we can have another great x-men villain

and glad you liked Tombstone update

ps. in terms of animations btw, its just different timings, additional frame here and there, but all made from the images that already were present in sff, i didnt have to sprite a single sprite there, its all your work

It's actually PrimeOp's work as well. I'd be offended if you don't take credit for this too. It's very possible that without you adding those animations, they would have been lost. I appreciate your effort a lot.

This is an impressive bit of work. I think you guys are off to a great start.

As far as the select screen is concerned is it possible to feature the characters smaller? It would allow us to see more of the background and help with the amount of gray on screen. If shrinking the sprites isn't feasible, then is it possible to animate them when selected? This way you can leave the characters in color eliminating the draw away of the grayscale effect.

As far as any additional characters to could be added I say make potential slots for black dragon's Prowler and Beto's Spider-Gwen. It may impress them enough to help you out beyond donating or providing permission to use their characters.

hey guys, i understand that many people want to play with sound, unlike me
so i did this quick patch
nothing amazing, but you will have screenpack sounds in place, as well as no silent special/hyper moves and no voice lines playing instead of explosions (hopefully)

Code: [Select]
www.mediafire.com/file/xtsesnbm7vwgtjc/Spider-man.rar/file
also thrown in classic capcom vs music for the stages, you can replace it to your liking (i recommend WizzyWhipitWonderful, i think he did music specifically for every character on his channel)

ps. also includes several bug fixes, and several ai changes (namely stronger spidey, mysterio, tombstone and weaker vulture (he was wrecking every villain)) so, even if you dont play with sound, you still might wanna download this one

sorry for making you download files constantly, but im on and off working on this, and every time i think its the last update

hey man, thanks
dont really think its a start, more like a finish, tbh  ;*))
and not really a fan of resized sprites, especially smaller ones, im pretty content with this select screen all and all
and not really big fan of prowler and spider-gwen as characters, so if someone wants to add them, they can go ahead, but i myself wont do it, im pretty sure. only ones im insterested in, are doc ock and kraven, which are already on the screen... (and maybe a decent lizard)
but thanks for the reply :)

ps. and yeah, i wanted to do animated characters, just like they did in cota (that was actually an inspiration for this kind of select screen), but as far as i know it is impossible to do this clean for 2 players. 2 simultaniously moving characters will overlap or "underlap" each other, leaving empty pixels

Thanks for this latest update, everything sounds great. And I hope that little by little you can continue to improve it.
I love all that '90s Animated Series vibe that the game has.

apparently there was some hobgoblin sff palette issue, that was fixed by ThatGuy (thanks man)
so... here is an updated file (hopefully, last one):

www.mediafire.com/file/3hszntem6zirmuz/Spider-man.rar/file

also added detailed credits file into the main folder
