Where can I find a good fighting game joystick controller?

Hey guys,
Turns out I'm NOT very good at fighting games. I've played them all my life, but never to get good at them. Oh yes, I was always able to beat my sister (if she didn't get lucky by spamming a move over and over) and dad who'd play with me.
But believe it or not, I never really understood there was a science to the game. Not just for pulling off combos, but how you should approach playing as and fighting against each character. It takes much more thinking and practice than I thought.
So long story short, I've kind of wanted to delve into learning how to "really play" fighting games and grow and get better at it. Not saying I'm going to go pro or anything.

Anyways, I'm looking for a decent but inexpensive joystick controller for my xbox 360/PC.
I've noticed that I seem to do better when it's not a 360 controller.

Anyone know where I can find one that doesn't cost $100+!?!?
My original thought on price was $30-$50. :S
Are they really that special that they should cost that much or are they just doing that because they can?

It's not necessarily the controller's fault as it is the D-Pad itself.

The D-pad is on a rocker switch with makes using one direction more difficult than it should be. The funny thing about it is that under the hood, the rocker switch is essentially sitting on four inputs that can be triggers like buttons.

A friend purchased a contoller mod called Evil D-pad that simply changes the rocker switch into 4 buttons. No more twitchy inputs. Jump you plan to jump, not accidentally. Dragon punch when you want to instead of fireball, etc.

But less expensive. I've found some that are around $50-$75, but not sure if cheaper means it could break easily or is not as accurate or responsive.

Did you check your local gamestop (or eb or whatever) because you might be able to find one used, if not it'll save you on shipping, and you cant test the feel of it.

there's a thing called a max shooter which allows you to use you keyboard as a controller too. if you're interested.
