How to Convert SFIII Style to SFA Style
« on: April 24, 2013, 03:13:35 AM »
I was wondering if anyone knew how to convert sprite styles, especially from Street Fighter III sprite-style to Street Fighter Alpha sprite-style. I've seen "CVS to SFA" stuff before, and some other stuff, but yeah, I need help. Thanks!

Practice mostly. SF3 has a couple of extra shades giving the sprites a more pillowy look. Really it's just study. You look at the gradients between shades on an SFA sprite and replicate that look on an SF3 sprite.

No amount of tutorials will assist in this cos the bulk of it is practice.

So, does that mean SFIII uses more colors? Anyway, I'll try to observe multiple sprites and stuff. And thanks! This is the second time you helped me out. You're EVERYWHERE in the help section. Like a ninja. Thanks

I've tried making some SF3 sprites before and they aren't the easiest thing to work with. Converting to SFA probably won't be very easy either, unless you're really good at drawing SFA style already.

1. SF3 sprites a larger than SFA style. Not only are they larger, but the body proportions are weird too. For instance, I've heard most people say the SF3 style have large hands and feet. So there would be resizing involved.

2. They use a lot more colors. SFA use around four or five shades of each color to provide shading. SF3 uses around twice that amount. If you look at the SF3 sprites, you'll notice that parts of the body there are deeper shadows, which use a completely separate set of colors, for instance, the skin color's alternate shades of color usually are a more purple color.

So in short, you'd have to resize the sprites, fix what the resize will cause to the sprite, thus practically redrawing the sprite and then recolor it to match the shading style of SFA. It will be easier if you have something like Photoshop or GIMP to work with. That way you can resize the sprite and draw over it in a separate layer.

Gee, thanks so much! I'll try to do that. Btw, I use Paint.Net.
