I just thought I'd share another theory on what Happened to mega man before the X series. Its simple and actual is kind of hinted by capcom.  Mega man Killed Mega Man. Now i wonder what happened to bass, proto and roll. You think Mega killed them too? I could believe proto and roll But not some much Bass. Proto could have been disarmed the same as Mega is the future so his death is understandable. Roll was made to die. Sorry roll fans but she's not a fighting robot. Bass tho would never be disarmed. So the Question really is what happened to Bass. Did Zero finish him?

Maybe the original Megaman, Proto, Bass, and Roll got infected with the Maverick Virus and X killed them all.  Wouldn't that be crazy.

My theory: Mega Man is X and the Maverick Virus is the mind of Dr. Willy converted to digital form.

Dr. Willy goes to the future and brings that Mega Man back as Quint. We also know that around Power Battle 2 Dr. Willy was already working on Zero.
So, using other tech he stole from Quint's future, Willy makes Zero. (Must have happened I think)
I also believe Dr. Willy gets fed up with all his robots failing to kill MM, and the ineffectiveness of his own ships he pilots.
So he figures out how to control machines with his own mind. So Willy places himself in a device that will allow him to place his thoughts within Zero. So along with a slew of lesser robot masters, he takes Zero out and Slaughters Bass, Protoman and Roll, in that order, just to piss off mega man and lead him into a trap. But when MM makes it to the end, he has to fight Zero. Mega Man just cant win that fight. He has to flee. In the escape he finds Willy's body in the control pod. He makes the only logical choice. He finally kills Willy. That drives Zero insane as the Dr. Is still connected. Willy/Zero has a freak out and they bring enough of the base around them to trap themself. Mega Man confesses what happened to Dr. Light, who has a nervous breakdown about mega man breaking one of the 3 laws of robotics, and locks him in a capsule to run scans on his AI and study the effects. Over the years Dr. Light finds bits and pieces of Willy's notes on Zero. Realizing that Zero was still a threat, he upgrades Mega Man into X. Legal matters separate Dr. Light from the Upgrade/Study Tube that MM-X is in, and he's forced to leave him behind. He eventually gets new funding, and works on the armor capsules, because he cant go back to upgrade x further.

Quint's future becomes an alternate universe due to the bifurcation of time.

Canon states that Zero was never awoken until he was discovered about 200 years later. Wily sealed him away because he could not control him.

I always figured the Post-X timeline was split from X because of X7 and X8 existing.

Zero's ending in MvC3 cemented that idea for me.

Actually, I'm fairly certain that the MMZ timeline started after Mega man X 5 considering that's when the father of Mega man wanted the X series to end.
