Can you mix and match?
« on: January 27, 2013, 01:30:52 AM »
Hi All,

I am setting up my first MUGEN environment and wanted to find out if I can mix and match stuff. Such as used the character select screen from IMT screen pack from Infinity, and then have a guilty gear setup for the battle, and maybe some other screen pack for the main page.

Thanks for the help!

I was with you for a bit of it when you said to use "the character select screen from IMT and have the Guilty Gear battle setup"  That you could do kinda easy.  Then it got tricky when you wanted to use another screenpack for the main screen.

Mind you I'm a just rookie who self-teaches, but my understanding is it breaks down like this:

If you look into your mugen\data\your_screenpack_name folder (or even just the data folder) you'll see a few files called: Select, System and Fight. (There's also intro and logo, but I'll mention that later)

Select is where you place the names/links of your character/stages/maxmatches
System for the most part, is your Main Screen, Options, Select Screen, Vs Screen, Continue, etc.
Fight is the Timer/Announcer/Lifebars (Battle stuff)

System is like the main file and will connect to Select or Fight, which I guess you can consider to be like Helper Files, and there's where you can play around a bit.

If you were to Copy the Fight.def/Fight.sff files from your Guilty Gear screenpack (or even find just the lifebars online) you could then include them into the IMT screenpack. First, I would back-up the fight.def/fight.sff files from the screenpack your going to replace them in. (I create a folder called "backup" and move them there. Second, it should be just as easy as copy and pasting the fight.def/fight.sff files over to the IMT folder.  If you want, do the same with the fightFX.def/FightFX.sff files.  Also remember to check inside your .def files to make sure all your filenames and directory routes are correct.

It would then use the battle menus from the Guilty Gear one while maintaining the IMT screenpack.

You could do something similar with the Logo.def that plays before the Intro.def when you first start mugen.  I honestly don't know how to change the mainscreen, but I would love to because I'd like to do it myself.  I'm pretty sure it CAN be done because I have a screenpack that uses the "Marvel Super Heroes" mainscreen, a Character select and vs from Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, and then the MSH lifebars again. (But I didn't make it)

Sorry if I'm not much help. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice it is very helpful. I am really just trying to get a way to have a huge character select screen and still customize some of the other stuff. IMT is the first screen pack that I ran into that had characters broken up into sections. Ideally it would be cool if you could make your own sections, but I am not sure if IMT supports that from what I can see.

You'd have to edit the SFF yourself to change any sprites in the pack. Which really isn't too hard, and the first step to really making your own MUGEN setup.
