This isn't the late 80s early 90s, when the US economy was recovering, so those are unlikely.

You have to understand the minds of companies. Take Marvel for example, they make comics and toys and TV shows, etc... Only so many people will buy toys and the TV show is mostly marketing, marketing for what? For high visibility and recognition. This is so that you fall in love with their charactes... here is the twist...

Only some people buy toys or comics, but everyone buys toothpast, socks, shirts, breakfast cereal, paper, etc.. so you need to convince people to buy spider-man shirts, hulk cereal, wolverine toothpase, etc... this is  what a franchise is and this is where the real money is, because the money sure isn't in comics.

Now you throw movies into the picture and you have higher visibility (for a bigger investment as well) and now you can have happy meals too. This is a merchandising a franchise and it's big money.
