Sound problem on Ubuntu

So I've had an interesting problem with my MUGEN for awhile now.

On my old machine which ran Windows XP I had MUGEN Plus and I never had an issue with the sound on it.
That machine broke down and I got this one which runs Ubuntu 10.4, I briefly had VirtualBox with an WinXP virtual machine and MUGEN worked fine on that, no sound issues.
Then I switched over to Linux MUGEN (which really sucked because hardly any characters worked for it.) but still, no sound issues.
Finally, I now use MUGEN 1.0 being ran with a Wine Program Loader and it works fine for the most part, except 9 times out of 10, there is absolutely no sound. Every now and again I'll get lucky and get sound for a few rounds but it always goes mute again.
I can only conclude that this is some fault of Wines', but I wanted to check to see if there were any other Ubuntu MUGEN users who have experienced the same problem and if they knew what I could do to fix it.

I saw Ubuntu and nearly choked with excitement!

I had the same problem on my old computer, it seems if it is too slow it will have sound difficulties.
The sound will only turn back on if you restart, and it will turn off if you use too much memory.

I solved the problem by getting newer computer, with more ram (512MB->2GB)
and a better graphics card.

Do you happen to know what your graphics card is?

I have no idea. But this is a much older machine. An IBM Thinkpad from 1999.

Yeah, I'm not sure MUGEN would even run well natively on that.

My only advice would be run MUGEN alone, not much more an old computer can do with a new application like 1.0.

Just a heads up, the new MUGEN (1.1 and up) will have cool new stuff like stage scrolling, window adjustments, and stuff like that, which REALLY won't work with a computer like that.

My suggestion, save up $500-$700 and go on down to best buy and get yourself a new computer.

This machine really isn't that bad. Aside from the sound issue, I am currently using 1.0 and there are no other problems with it. Great FPS, loads up quick, although it is a tad bit laggy in full HD. But yeah, hopefully once the newer versions of MUGEN start rolling in, I'll have a much better computer.
