Bass released (Original by Chaotic and Zero)
« on: March 08, 2011, 02:32:24 AM »
Hey again folks!  You might remember me mentioning that I was working on editing another character in the help section, so this is who I was working on!  Bass by Chaotic and Zero!  I've done several things to improve, and the readme may not have listed them all... however, I do say it's a fine piece of work, so give it a shot!

Hello i'm not trying to start anything, but I think it is funny you have to ask permission to edit, did anyone ask Capcom or Marvel or Nintendo if they could use there characters?  :)

Thanks Clee, that's nice to hear.  I'm glad you like him.

And Acey, no, I didn't, but I don't see how that could be an objection, aside from the fact I'm hosting the character.  Was gonna make it a patch, but I had to edit several things in the SFF and SND, and basically that was all of the files, so I apologize.  Hopefully they won't mind.   :o

To Atiles,  ^^(PM)^

Quote
This is my our very first character together, and I'll be damned if I see him hosted without my permission.
So If you want to host Bass, please send me an E-mail. I have a a website there is no need
To host this guy. I worked very hard on him and will be deeply saddened if he is misused.
I put plenty of work on editing these Sprites. This rant in a nutshell, Do not steal from this character or host him.
I will NOT give permission for the use of these sprites.

So in short, your actions are contrary to the specific wishes of the people who put in all the hours in the first place. Different creators have different allowances regarding their characters and this forum upholds that right.

I believe there's no need to ask the actual Game Company's permission to use their characters for a FREE 2D Fighting Engine that can be used when characters, stages, etc. has been made...well of course as long as its NOT for profit...

So this is why Luigi-Master got warned, just curious.

Acey, I kinda agree on your statement here. I think his coding needed improvement and Luigi-Master fixed him up, but was wrong because he hosted it without permission. Chaotic's quote sounds like he doesn't want it to be hosted somewhere else because of sprites. At least he didn't use them to make a completely new character. This still could pass as a patch and would be no problems instead of uploading the whole character (Like get rid of the ending, snd, and palette files). Just to be on the safe side, it's best to contact Chaotic immediately.

I believe there's no need to ask the actual Game Company's permission to use their characters for a FREE 2D Fighting Engine that can be used when characters, stages, etc. has been made...well of course as long as its NOT for profit...
That post made me laugh.

So then why do the same rules no apply to us? He is not making a profit on it?  /:O

Hello i'm not trying to start anything, but I think it is funny you have to ask permission to edit, did anyone ask Capcom or Marvel or Nintendo if they could use there characters?  :)

I think that's a very common understanding of the situation so let me point out some important points:

1) Capcom allows us to do this, they're cool with it.

2) As a Mugen community we have made a decision to respect the individual interests of the content creators. If someone says "don't edit my stuff", or "don't host my stuff" then we respect that.

So... There is a big difference between actually ripping a couple hundred sprites from a game and programming them into mugen compared to taking someone elses finished product and moving a few things around before re-releasing it. Obviously we're talking about the later here. So if someone wants to rip Bass from mugen one screen shot at a time, clean up the sprites one by one, then arrange them into an SFF file, animate all the sprites then program the entire character from scratch then we can have that discussion. Unfortunately that is not what is going on here. Taking the hundreds of hours from Chaotic's and Zero's time, adding 8 of your own hours to it and then hosting the creation is not considered appropraite since Chaotic made himself clear in the readme file.

The solution is simple and if you can't be bothered to obtain permission to host something then it's considered the easy answer, make a patch.

So this is why Luigi-Master got warned, just curious.

Yes, absolutely.

So then why do the same rules no apply to us? He is not making a profit on it?  /:O

The rules are always the same, creating mugen content is revered (hundreds of hours), editing mugen content is frowned upon (couple of minutes).

But there's one itty bitty problem with that.

There was no readme in the Bass I downloaded, thus, no contact information.  I downloaded it off here, and had no idea he had his own site he hosted on.  I'll try my best to make this into a patch, since it already is the character, but hey.

But then again, if I did this the right way, probably the only response I would've gotten would've been Clee's.  Funny how a controversial character garners far more attention than a legit character.   :-??

Is the one hosted here the most recent version?  If not, then whoops.  :/

I can guarantee the original release got a lot more attention. But you are absolutely correct, when Chaotic updated the characters he left out the original readme file, so you had no way of knowing. I certaintly didn't think you had any malicious intent here but I think this discussion become a good learning experience for all who take a moment to notice it.

What I meant was if this was a "clean character", as in a patch, no one would really care, or garner attention.  I wasn't saying anything about this being more worthy of views than the old release.  Eh, whatever.  People should learn to deal with things they don't like.

Check the first post.  The character is now a patch.  You're welcome.

Oh cool. You got yourself unwarned now. Looks like everything's back to normal now.

Edit: Found a small little bug on the SFF. Sprite (450,0) doesn't have shared palette checked. This means if he has a different palette and gets attacked, he will change back to his original (TrueBASS.act) colors. Just to give anyone heads up if they have any palettes for him. Probably no one will notice this because he only comes with one palette when he got released.

Oh, ok. Luigi-Master was warned at the time so it got removed by Acey. You posted your comment after he made a patch instead, so it made me thought you were acting like a noob.

Also, look at my last post on the 1st page. I noticed a small bug in his SFF file.

That's weird.  Even if it is checked, nothing negative happens.  It's a minor issue, so I'll include that in the next update.  Thanks!

@ Sonic:  The patch is on my site, and the character is hosted on this forum.  It used to be a full character, till I discovered people weren't fond of that idea.

Yeah, it only happens if you have palettes for him (Which I downloaded that someone made way back. Forgot who though). Since he only has one palette on the original release, you can't notice it. I had a couple so I noticed it right away when I hit Bass.

Ah, I see.  Later, I should try merging the palettes together.  As in, make his projectiles and Gospel Boost have a palette.

im actually fine with the code tweaks and replacements but those are zeros sprites, not mine and i dont know where he stands on that issue.  the bass2.0 were my sprites u can replace those sprites with mine if u like but just out of respect for zero u should take the character down until u can get permission from zero to use his sprites.

Wait, there's a Bass 2.0?  For all I knew, the latest version that existed was the one hosted here.

I'd rather update something new than old, so please direct me in the direction of this new version.

Hey, thanks a lot!

Man, these new sprites look great!  I'll just get to replacing the sprites and stuff, and adding some code from the new bass, such as for Treble, intros, and win poses.  Might take a while.   /:O
