Mental illness in an elephant species, maybe? We have humans who are younger in their mentallities, so maybe the same thing occurrs in some animals.

It's called coprophagia and it's a natural thing that some species do to acquire vitamins K and B, as well as some salts. This is also common in deer and rodents.

I learned about this from Metal Gear Solid 3.  :(|)
