I got a problem!
« on: May 26, 2010, 06:44:54 PM »
Okay so about 3 days ago I was on my computer and Gimp wouldn't work and firefox wouldn't work. So I restarted my computer to see if that would work. But it made it worse! It starts up and then it goes to the windows start normally thing so click it and it starts it and then it restarts its self and goes right back to the window start normally page. There are 5 options
-safe mode
-safe mode with command prompt
-safe mode with networking
-last known configuration
-star windows normally
I have chosen all and none work!! It just restarts its self over and over and over again!!!
God I hate my brother!!!

Well I sent rage a PM. But you have 3 options. 1 is to use your Windows OS disc to do a full repair. Don't format unless it's the last resort. Repairing will replace all system components with the ones on the CD. But will keep all your settings and programs. You may have to reinstall drivers though. But that's a small hassle compared to re doing the entire computer.

Your second and third options are to use Hien's boot CD or a Ubuntu live CD. The ubuntu live CD comes with a virus scanner which can read NTFS file systems. Which is what windows primarily uses for it's file system. Hien's boot CD has the same tools IIRC. But if you are in experienced you could do way more damage then actually fix things. Ubuntu live CD is free and so is Hien's boot CD. Ubuntu will let you use the full operating system from the CD. So you don't have to install it.

So try which ever one you think is simpler for you. I would advise the repair route through the Windows CD. Since it's a set it and forget it type of thing. You hit repair and then just wait for it to finish.

It would be easier if you can go into safe mode. As I could give you a good 100 things that would probably fix it. Plus I could even remote into your PC while still maintaining my security and yours.  But since you can't get into Safe mode. Those 3 options are really all you have besides a complete reformat.

But it sounds like a virus, file system error, or maybe even hardware issue. But the hardware issue is a slim chance. it sounds more like a file system error or virus.

EDIT: Also could you PM rage the exact problem or list it here. Does the computer just reboot? Does it have errors before the reboot? Like popups or warnings? Does it BSOD (Blue Screen of death?) Stuff like this can narrow it down.

Okay when I first get on it goes to the options I listed then I pick one and then it goes to the loading screen and then a blue screen flashes and then it restarts its self. It goes back to the options.

It's a virus, I had the same thing happen to me a few months back. Except safe mode worked for awhile, so I was able to get it to boot sometimes. But then that completely stopped.

Luckily I made a disc to install everything I needed with my settings & all. So I just ran that disc & started over.

It's a very nasty virus. I've had a similar thing happen to me about a year or two ago, and I did lose a good portion of the contents on my C-Drive. The good thing is that you will be able to retrieve some parts of your work, but you'll have to take it to a professional. I was lucky that I knew a few individuals who would fix my computer for free.

But listen to xPreatorianx, because that's pretty much the only options available to you, besides taking it to a professional to do it for you.

here's P's reply;
Okay when I first get on it goes to the options I listed then I pick one and then it goes to the loading screen and then a blue screen flashes and then it restarts its self. It goes back to the options.

That sounds like a hardware issue. But I can't be 100% sure unless I have the error code. It can be a hardware issue, software issue, or driver issue. Tell him to disable automatic restart on his computer and write down the error code. It will have a huge hexadecimal number like 0x10000008 or something similar. It may also have the file that caused the error. Like NTFS.sys SPTD.sys so on and so on. It will be a system file or .dll.  Hopefully.

I need all that information to tell him what to do. But  it sounds like he should do the repair anyways. Since the only way I can fix it, is by remoting in under Safe mode. Which he cannot access. That is if it's software or driver related. One of his system components could have gone bad. But I have no idea without the the exact error code.

The hexidecimal number is the memory range that was inaccessible or truncated during the time of the error. Basically it means the program/driver/system file accessed a memory address it was not supposed to and windows kicked it out. Which resulted in a blue screen. A virus can do this as well. So I still need the information or it's pretty much a shot in the dark.

Even if he does the repair I would still advise him to give the error code. It could creep up after a system repair if it's something more serious then just a driver problem or virus problem.

Then it sounds like a full repair is in order. Don't reformat. That is your last option. Also Don't take it to a repair shop because all they do is reformat no matter how easy or complex the problem is and then charge you for it. Repair shops are high way robbery unless you are replacing actual hardware. Anything on the software side is 100% cheaper to do yourself.

So use your windows CD and select repair. It will restore your computer's system files to the original shipped on the CD. But will keep all your settings, Progams, and configurations. Try that and see if you can at least get into safe mode to run a virus scan. If you can run as many as you can find for free until they all report 0 infections. If you can't get into safe mode or regular windows after the repair. then do a complete reformat.

Reformatting a computer is always your very last resort. It's for emergencies only. Like you need to get a college paper done, Need to work on the computer for your job. Something like that. If it can be fixed without a reformat then that is the best option.
