"Nintendo is said to be planning a new iteration of its dominating Wii console in 2011, though the console may be a direct competitor to the PS3 and Xbox 360 rather than a device aimed at children and casual gamers, and may come with a different kind of controller to the current Wii.
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada revealed what he presumably knows to be Nintendo’s plans in an interview at the Tokyo Games Show, saying the new console would be similar to the PS3 or Xbox 360 and due in 2011, potentially abandoning the Wiimote for what would presumably be a conventional controller.
He also commented that he does not expect great things from Microsoft and Sony’s copy cat motion controllers:

“Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine. Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function,”

He is however impressed by Microsoft’s Project Natal, a controller system set to dispense with traditional controllers entirely, in favour of gestures and objects.

Nintendo’s recent consoles have proved highly successful in their various markets, but their technology has not been at the cutting edge for some time; presumably this new console will be an attempt to create a fully up-to-date and “HD” Nintendo platform."

I don't know if it's just me but doesn't it seem way too early for Nintendo to be releasing a new console already?! I know they're trying to compete with Microsoft and Sony but still. . .

wow.. he's a few years off isn't he.. basically making it like XBOX 360 & PS3... It better have good graphics, memory, controller, and such...

Sony and MS are releasing a upgrade to each system. Its supposed to tide us over till the next gen. So sony have the motion wand, and MS have Project natal. So MS are gonna release a 360 with project natal built in and also a slight upgrade on hardware. Well thats the rumors atm nothing has been final besides MS actually saying they are gonna make new hardware to break the gap between current gen and "Next Gen"

NES: 1985-1994 = 9 years
SNES: 1991-1997 = 6 years
N64: 1996-2002 = 6 years
GCN: 2001-2007 = 6 years
WII: 2006-? = ? years

Each console Nintendo released so far had games released on it for at least six or nine years. It's been almost three years for the Nintendo Wii and they're already thinking of making a new console?!

It does seem a bit early, but I'm definitely intrigued. I haven't touched my Wii in ages. (Oh lord, I that didn't sound right at all >_>) I think the main reason I spend so much more time using my 360 is the fact that I can instantly communicate, handsfree with all of my friends. Thats something that the Wii is missing. Reliable online Multiplayer, and voice chat.

I agree with you BigJ. I would like to see some actual reliable multiplayer and voice chat in the new Nintendo console and I'm sure others want it as well.

Actually, no, the next console SHOULD be out by 2011.

see, every console comes out in 5 year incraments:

NES: 1986
SNES: 1991
PSX:1995?
N64: 1996
PS2: 2000
Gamecube: 2001
Xbox: 2001
Xbox 360: 2005 (odd one out...)
Wii: 2006
PS3:2006 (also odd one out....)

But in general, 2011-2012 should have the next gens...

I think they should just sit on it. Each company still has issues they need to resolve for the current gen consoles. The economy isn't going good and a lot of people still don't have current gen consoles. Granted its finally working down with price drops, and if the economy continues to fall as it has been, by 2011 we'll be in something worse than a depression, and selling consoles at that time will most likely hurt the companies. Sony already got hurt since it costs them so much to make a ps3. None of the 3 console companies need to put themselves in a risky position, last thing we need is another Sega.

Even if they are ready with their console "That has the same graphics like the Ps3 and Xbox360"(

) What can we expect?
Just some ''exclusives''? yay..
I'll stick with my Ps3 (and Xbox360) since they will last for longer (Can't wait for the Natal and the Wand

i mean like wow. already they doin a new system. figures though. Thing is they shoulda kept it the same like the old days. for mature audiences. The Nes and Snes were the best of nintendo. they went all out and damn there all developers supported em. Due to the economy now hopefully they make a reasonable price sale and stay true to the hardcore gamer fans and not 5 yr olds.

Give the option of Developers who wanna make a game for 5 yr olds. But Not totally just making their systems soul objective for preschoolers. they will never win or get back into the console wars officially that way.

to me so far Mad World, the new Castlevania rebirth & Tatsunoko Vs Capcom gives hope of the Real Nintendo essence coming back. but 2011 might be too late and could be an official curtain call like with Sega and its console development. And just only develop games.

But yeah, there are a lot of REALLY good games for the Wii, but I for the most part agree. Still, I'd hate to see Nintendo become some company like Microsoft that relies completely on dime-a-dozen first person shooters and 3rd party games. Remember that what made them win on the NES and SNES and even N64 was their originality. Keep the Marios and Zeldas coming.

But yeah, I really doubt that the new console is coming out all that soon. This seems more like conceptual stuff, which is very legitimate halfway into the Wii's lifetime.

DT, The Ps3 system has some good things to offer too, Like Uncharted 2, Resistance 2, MGS4 and a lot more, And a lot of Non-Exclusives too, Oh yeah, And free online gaming.
It's sad how some people can't see this.
I also have a Xbox360 who has awesome games too, I just dislike the Wii....

I still only use my PS3 to rest my feet when I play my 360. Its been getting chilly in the house so I have been turning it on. A $600 foot warmer is nice!

In the summer when it was hot & I didn't feel like turning on the central air, I would put my PS3 under the open window to keep it propped open.

I guess the PS3 is a pretty good system. It has it's usefulness for all seasons.

funny dude DT. nah but im saying though even though i mainly support my 360 and my old ps2 still to this day and i havent gotten a ps3 yet i still like sony. I mean (ps3) its not a bad system its just the fluent games arent a heavy flow to me like xbox360 right now. i got burned again when they mentioned that god of war 3 got pushed back...

but for arguement sake on the Wii and Nintendo issue, in comparison with 360 & ps3 i dont see The Wii or Nintendo no where in that picture at the end man.....

like i said i just see sony and microsoft and thats it,,,,,,lol. just being real man
