TMNT (1989 movie) UK censorship.
« on: August 28, 2009, 06:58:41 AM »
I'm not here to complain or whine or talk about how the UK version killed Mikey's awesomeness.
no. I'm here to compliment it.
because, if it wasn't for all of Mikey's edits
there would not be "extra" scenes for the rest of us to watch.
Think about it, if you're going to edit every single scene of someone fighting in an action movie
that's going to be alot less movie time.
instead of doing that
for the UK version they added-in alittle bit to each scene to make it pan out better
here is the only one that stands out (well) as different.

and just because I can

Keep Practicing

From what you showed, the UK version took out way too much. Why did they censor it? They cut out all the jokes about the wheel of fortune.

The UK is on the other side of the coin from us when it comes to censorship. They censor violence, however the aired televison allows more sexual content and sometimes even outright nudity. Several times have I seen straight up "boobage" watching BBC.

I figure American's concept is this: 'Our children are more likely to go sleep with the kid next door then shoot him/her, so we better not promote the idea on the public medium.' I can't say what UK thinks.

like I said before, there is actually more in this version, the only thing really taken out was the use of Mikey's Nunchucks (and yes the second clip I posted was from the unedited/worldwide version)
I guess those other jokes where simply lost in the video editing.

so attempting to cut people up with axes and swords is cool, but you can't swing around wooden sticks tied together with a piece of string?

IIRC
Nunchucks are/where banned weapons in the UK
it wasn't about the Violence, it was about the legality of the whole deal.

Yeah, nunchuks are banned here that's why mikey's nunchuks were edited out where possible - We've also had Nunchuks edited out of a few games over here too, Remember li Long from Soul Blade? his weapon was changed to a '3 connecting bars' weapon instead of Nunchuks.

On the other hand, we have plenty of nudity on our telly (usually from around 9pm onwards)

And just for the record - you'll probably find that it's the UK's kids that are more likely to be sleeping with the neighbours, our age of sexual consent is 16 & most have sex & drink before that anyway.
(one of my mates & my cousin are the only people I know that waited until they were over 16)

I never knew nunchucks were banned in Great Britain.  I guess they couldn't show Bruce Lee's super-cool nunchaku fight from "Way of the Dragon" over there, either.  Still, it's kind of interesting that they changed Li Long's weapon to a Sansetsukon/3-sectioned staff; did they do the same thing with Maxi in Soul Calibur?

 >:-(-| BTW, shinrahunter, I'd like to compliment the BBC for having one of the funniest car shows on TV to date: Top Gear.  Any chance someone out there could do a MUGEN version of the Stig?

Yeah, Top Gears awesome. As for Maxi, they've allowed Nunchuks to be shown now so yeah, he has them.

It was way more censored than that. They weren't even Ninja Turtles, they were Hero Turtles.

It's not too surprising, though. I was around when the Turtles movies were in theaters and there was a small outcry about the violence and language (given the target audience).

Yeah, the cartoon series was altered to Hero turtles, I think the film kept the Ninja Turtles title though - it's a long time since I watched it though ;D
