no they are old school, you guys don't seem to know much about the history of rap

http://www.oldschoolhiphop.com/

I'm well aware of my favorite genre, when I listen to mostly old school hip hop to begin with. Either way, 2Pac is the greatest to ever grace hip hop.

If 2pac is old school than what is run dmc?

Uh... old school. What else would they be? Anything before mid-90's is old school according to most people.

i dont think that is true

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_school_hip_hop

http://www.amazon.com/Old-School-Rap-Vol-2/dp/B0000037ZO

http://www.oldschoolhiphop.com/

don't forget, wiki is not always to be trusted... to me, true old school hip hop ended in 1985 (my birth year) and the 2nd gen started from there (that'd include N.W.A., Native Tongue Click, Pac...)

yes that is when most people agree that old school rap ended somewhere in between 1985 and 1986, that  is why i was like wtf pac is old school

As much as you want to argue about who's lyrically better, club songs, regardless of how crappy the lyrics are, are top sellers. Kanye has yet to drop a song like that.

Then what would you catagorize Stronger as? And most of those club songs never sell albums. Walk It Out didn't help DJ Unk.

"Stronger" from the album Graduation contains a sample of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and the dance charts reflect the club scene... Stronger will be play for years in the club based on that sample, when I heard it back in early June I immediately knew the sample

stronger is a "club" song but you will hear 50's I get money in the club more than stonger and yes club songs do help sell records..franchise boys, young joc,lil boosie, soldier boy,Hurricane chris, and even dj unk having there songs played in clubs boosted there sales to more than they would have been had they not been played why..club songs=radio play=t.v. play=record sales and 50 two singles are club songs

I don't really go out to the club, but if it's played more then *lol*. What I meant by selling is they don't sell as much as the big dogs in the game by going Plat. Either they go gold or near gold (but most people don't sell as much now-a-days anymore anyways).

Actually, I find that poll somewhat accurate, if you only count lyricists in mainstream Hip Hop. There's no Rakim, Nas, Immortal Technique, KRS One, Big L, Big Pun, Lupe Fiasco, and that's off the top of my head. The list goes on and on. But everyone has their own opinions about what does, and what doesn't make someone the best. Anyways, Hip Hop in itself isn't really making NEARLY as much money as it used to, which is why it's so important for an artist to own damn near ALL of their earnings for each record sold. The game's down 30% from the turn of this century, which is a HUGE figure if you do the math. But, that's another topic altogether. As far as lyrics go, Kanye is VERY good...he has the ability to imbed deeper depth into his lyrics at will, and use wordplay without struggling for it. Which is both a gift, and a talent. 50.....well.....not so much.  :| He struggles just to get his punchlines across, which aren't that great, and not to mention his lack of technical skill. He's been reduced to just making things rhyme. I don't know what happened to the promise he showed with 'Get Rich or Die Tryin', but it's gone. Kanye is a musical genius. He can create new and original content without having to replicate the same, tired formula. 50 uses the same formula in almost EVERY song! He's slipped, but people these days just seem to follow the hype. The People DO run mainstream Hip Hop, and that's a fact, but contrary to popular belief, Hip Hop is NOT dead. You just have to FIND it in other places. It's up to you whether you support the commercialism, or whether you support the true 'artists' of this time.

Sorry Jay but I cant give any sort of a realness title to a man who made a living off of biting other ppl.  I went a little too far sayin he was as fake as 50.  I renig that statement, but he is fake.

Jay-Z is a fake and a biter. I may like his songs, but he is a big time biter, from 2Pac to Snoop Dogg. Cam'Ron made an audio of all the lines he has bitten from.
Cam'Ron's whack @$$ bites just as much and FROM Jay-Z (If you haven't heard it, click here:o [-X \-/o That Swagger Jacker didn't impress me, just about every line was from the same song. Plus they pick the wackest Jay songs possible. Out of the 45 Jay-Z songs I have on my mp3 none of the songs used are on there. Just about every rapper bites. I've recognized Jay and Big lyrics in 50 Cent, Kanye, Jeezy, Wayne, and PLENTY of others.

Anyways, one of my favorite Kanye outburst momemts. :DxDie

as much as I want to say Kanye I think 50 would win this due to the fact that his songs are more catchy and are made for the general public while kanye's music is set more a more hip-hop crowd......cause really other than stronger you will not hear much of kanye's new cd in the club

thats a good point.

I never really heard Cam bite because I don't really listen to him (Juelz is the only Dipset member I like). I'll give that song a listen tomarrow though. I've heard other artist use a legend's lines before, but they do it intentionally. Jay just straight out does it for atleast 4 bars.

This is why DMX is my all time favorite artist, he doesn't listen to anyone but himself... and 2Pac occasionally (from an interview).

It was in clubs and radio stations everywhere. His popularity went over the charts. You're telling me that song didn't help him? Albums aren't the only way of making money you know.

Also, Stronger is nowhere as popular as 50 cent's I get money.

I've pretty much lost most interest in newer rap. 90's were some good years. None of the rappers I liked, save for Ludacris (and I think Eminem) hit it bit before the new millennium.

But if I had to choose one, I'd choose 50 for two reasons.

1) His old stuff I liked. Not so much his newer stuff.
2) To spite Kanye. I think he's a massive prick.
Punctuation and capitalization can make the difference between "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse," and, "I helped my uncle jack off a horse."

92% of people have moved onto rap. If you're part of the 8% who thinks rap isn't music, sucks to be you.

Most newer stuff sucks, though.

Yeah I heard that.  Jay made millions off of biting stuff off Biggie and many other rappers.  Cam bit some sh*t but it wasnt used in any mainstream tracks.  Jay used it in his hit songs and not to mention his flow is based of the rappers he bit.  U a hov fan so wont look at the truth.  Its aiight tho.  Just about everyone in the industry bit Biggie at one time.  Jay made the most money off of it and he was the 1st to do it.  And he got ripped by LL Cool J old skool status.

This is why DMX is my all time favorite artist, he doesn't listen to anyone but himself... and 2Pac occasionally (from an interview).
Dark Man X is the best.  One of the realest rappers to ever spit.

On topic: Kanye was in the lead last I checked. Although he has the better album(IMO), he's not better than 50 but he should win this one because people are getting tired of 50 and his one track mind.

 >:-(-|
Off topic: Pac is generally considered the best ever because he's the only rapper to find that balance of subject matter that allowed most people to relate to him in one way or another. Most artist these days have niche crowds.

Heres my top lyricist list:

1.2pac
2.jay-z
3.B.I.G.
4.Nas
5.Scarface
6.Eminem
7.Andre 3000
8.Common
9.kanye
10.Jadakiss

I know I didn't mention any non-mainstream rappers but there are good reasons why artists don't sell.

Well I don't listen to rap almost at all anymore... but I do know that 50 is going to lose and Kanye will win.

Kanye has much more talent than 50 does.  Why didn't 50 just die when he got shot all those times >_<.

But really, on the topic, I'm glad Kanye is selling and everything, but I AM tired of people judging who's the best based on sales as opposed to actual TALENT. I just see it so often that it really sickens me. Like 'Ye said, he never cared about being number one, he just wants the respect he feels he deserves. I don't REALLY know him, and he seems like an @$$, but alot of the things he says, I feel, are real and from the heart. Although people knock him alot for his fussing, not saying they're wrong, I just look at it like he ALWAYS keeps true to himself...no matter what people may think. That's as real as it gets.

Also, Stronger is nowhere as popular as 50 cent's I get money.

I beg to differ. Stronger get's more play on the radio than I Get Money could ever dream. Also, Stronger was number 2 on the charts, while I Get Money was 54. Also...

I honestly can't argue with that list except the order. I'd take Ye out and add Rakim in there near the top. I'd put NaS over Jay, and Biggie for #2.
