I just don't feel that it's entirely needed. I mean, sure, lets get your basic "this guy is an bunghole for various reasons, and he's having a tournament, here's eight people that want to kick his has for different reasons" or "this company is holding a tournament and inviting all the world's strongest fighters to participate, but tehy're really up to some evil sh*t and the tournament is just a cover up." I think that's really the gist, anything more than that is overly complicated.

for example, does anyone actually understand what's going on in the story of the rival schools games, or guilty gear? cause I'd love to be clued in.

Well, first of all I think that SFIV is more focued on shadaloo (or anyway it's written) future more than on a hero, so it can fit on a better way with sfIII (knowing that SFIV technically is a SFII/half game) anddddd..... guilty gear, we have a main character who is an anti-hero (Sol-badguy) it's really based on a future alternate reality, first of all, it's known that so badguy was some sort of a scientist who took part on an project, creation of the gears, in some sort of way it's a success and he becomes some sort like a "weapon x copy" but un GG world, that's when he becomes a gear, if I'm not wrong he worked with justice, i-no and "the man" who are the main bosses of the games or something like that, but, after he becomes a gear he enters to some society (don't remember it's name right now) and he starts a partnership with Kliff (the old man) and Ky kiske, that's where holy order sol appears anddddddddd after that he steals a sword (furaiken I think) that belonged to the order and becomes in a sort of mercenary who kills other gears, all the games are some sort of tournaments (like king of fighters) and the bosses are the ones who organize it o.O well I think that's the main part.

Rival Schools story is based solely on this:

There's a school (Justice High) that wants to recruit students from other schools to create Japan's most perfect school. They'll take the students willingly and unwillingly and its a facade to build a perfect army to take over Japan. Students start going missing and a few other students from other schools decide to investigate the situation which leads to many story arcs and at the end its found out the real mastermind and he's defeated by whichever student you wanna say beat him.

Alpha 1 wasnt canon and the heroes of alpha 2 and 3 were charlie and rose

and yes sol is the original gear thats why he wears that headband to supress his power and hide his appearance
