Jack Sparrow, Savvy? Oh look! A downloadable copy!
« on: September 10, 2007, 11:16:28 AM »
Apparently my WIP topic just disappeared off the face of the earth (along with my profile settings). I'm dreading recreating this topic, because every time I do, within two or three days the forum collapses, or the forum gets "rolled back" or something, and I have to type it out all over again. I reckon Jack must have the curse of the black spot, because all his topics keep getting swallowed up by some sort of internet-dwelling Kraken. Ho hum!

Gifs:
Old stance (based on Hayato Kanzaki)-

Elizabeth Swann (striker, based on Ruby Heart and POTC2 outfit, thanks again to TGM for the idea)-

Will Turner (striker, also based on POTC2 but without coat, needs more work)-

That scene-

The "Crew"-

Animated Gifs:
Old Jack style (ewwww)-

New Jack style (mmmmm!)-

Walking/swaggering-

The ever popular run-

Videos:

Latest Jack News:
Onwards with the basic animations! I start uni in October, that may hamper progress a teensy bit...

Other Notes:
 • What you see is what you get, won't be changing style of sprites.
 • Finished product will be open-source (because open sauce tastes GOOD!).
 • No need to suggest ideas like using Ruby Heart's ship or making an intro for P.o.t.S's Kraken, I'm already one (or five) steps ahead of j00.
 • I want to say thanks to everyone who posted in the old Jack Sparrow topic as all the responses were very kind, reassuring and most often helpful.
 • Status: est. 11%. Maybe.

Excellent work, R.G.; have you thought of, perhaps, implementing Davy Jones (and his minions) into any of Jack's attacks?

Thanks for offering Mclovin to PM him the stage, I can't find the link for where I got it (downloaded it months ago). :-[

As for the Davy Jones idea, I may have him appear in a win animation (or maybe even a lose animation). I don't want to use too much of him because there is always the slim possibility that one day in the far future I may want to make the tentacled one as a separate character (don't hold me to it, though). There is a much better possibility that I'd make Barbossa (my second favourite POTC character, next to Jack). But as I said, don't hold me down to anything. I'm one of those people who doesn't make optimistic plans only to disappoint everyone later. ;)

Given the unpredictability of the engine (and one's life), it's only to be expected. Thank you for the hard work, and I cannot wait to see the good Captain in action!

yeah thanks to Bobby_Zee i got the stage.
@ Russian Gestapo...the mos thing i like about your wip is the animation.
it's really good...usually sprites edits have a lot of animation frame skips but that one have a good deal of animations :)
i see that you are working hard on this so take your time.
GOOD LUCK Russian Gestapo

Why don't you just alter Jack's old stance and make it Will's?  He seems like he would stand a lot more valiantly than Jack would.

The Krogan Sandwich.  Have you had yours today?

The intro is freaking BRILLIANT! Russian Gestapo, my friend, this character will be great. I can already tell.

By the way, how about a super where he opens a treasure chest (Ruby Heart's can be used as a base) and Pintel and Ragetti pop out and shoot the opponent? Pintel's base can be Chang Koehan.

@BigJ, Bobby_Zee, Mclovin, eSkRo, TGM, SpacemanHardy, lightblackheart, Magma Dragoon, Gemini Guy, malisiousjoe, Sync The Tempest, anjim and Mustkillroy (hope I didn't miss anyone out): Thank you so much! All the reassuring comments over the last 2 pages make this worthwhile. And they say the MUGEN community can't be kind! Shows what "they" know. You guys rock.  ^:)^

@SpacemanHardy: Great idea you had about using my original Jack as a base for Will, read below...

@anjim: There is a certain degree of gayness, I like to think the word for Jack is "camp".  ;) I know someone had replied to you saying that Jack is gay to a certain degree (don't know what happened to the post, it disappeared), and that person was right. In fact, the first time I saw Jack Sparrow in a preview of POTC, I was almost put off seeing the film ("wow, gay pirates", I thought. "Not my cup of tea"). Ironically, I ended up seeing the film on a pirate copy, and instantly fell in love with it.

@Mustkillroy: I hate to say this, but you mentioned the only two characters I wasn't looking to add to Jack's movelist. I want to keep Pintel and Ragetti free just in case I do ever make that Barbossa...
However, I'll jot down Pintel's base for future use (I like making sprites, so I'll probably sprite him just for kicks), and keep the treasure chest in mind (can't be a pirate without a treasure chest!). Also, I'll assure you that there will be other strikers aside from just Elizabeth and Will... ;)

Okay, tonight I sprited Will Turner using my original Jack Sparrow sprites as a body base (thanks again to SpacemanHardy for suggesting this, and to whoever it was who suggested Strider, sorry I've forgotten your name  :-[), and Strider Hiryu's head as a base for Will's face. I'll admit I'm not entirely happy with the result, and thus I am quite prepared for any negative comments on his appearance. However, as this is just an experiment, it'll do for the time being (my gosh, I've just realised how chubby his face is, and how I need to make the eyes bigger...):

(This last one has made me realise that I may have to play around with resizing Elizabeth at some point, make her shorter...)

I'm almost done with experimenting. I want to see if I can incorporate Will and Liz's colours into Jack's palette without having to apply a new palette to Jack's 150 or so finished sprites and reapplying them to the character. I know I could just check the "apply palette" box off, but I think it would be nice for the strikers to change colours with Jack too. If anyone has any suggestions to help me with this, fire away, otherwise I'll just have to try out this sneaky idea I have...(experimenting with a backup copy of Jack, of course. I don't want to lose all the work so far just because of a silly palette error ;) )

After the experimenting, it's back to those basic anims. I'll probably finish his jump (which I started a week ago) and then get around to those pesky hit animations (gotta make sure they look good for if Jack goes up against Michael Jackson ;) ). Phew, long post! Stay cool everyone, and thanks again!

The old Jack sprite really worked to make Will. :)

Just wondering...
Are you going to keep Will with Hayato's stance or make a custom one for him too?
Lloyd: Presea, no one can stand against your axe!!!
Presea: The enemy has been defeated. We should move on.
Lloyd: Cold...

I think what I like best about this WIP is it's utter uniqueness in the MUGEN scene. Like The Great Matsutzu's creations, this has this off the cuff vibe that I like. When a lot of people are concerned with DC and Marvel characters (which I love, don't get me wrong), we've got stuff like this, more off the beaten path then Street Fighter edits and comic characters. Who else would have even though of making Jack Sparrow for MUGEN? And even pulled it off effectively in spirit of the character like you are? I can't think of too many.

Since my previous post was deleted with the old thread, I'll just reiterate how much I like seeing even a new sprite of this character. I suspect this will be one excellent character when you are done.

@Sasuke-kun: Thanks. I'm not sure if Will will looks anything like this sprite come the time I actually need to implement him, I may play around with the legs but keep the sprite's posture from the waist upwards (seems to me that Will fought more upright than Hayato, who has quite a lazy stance).

@dl316bh: Thank you so much. I was actually inspired by many of the other television/movie-type characters already made for MUGEN - Robocop, Rambo (despite that huge flaw in his AI that causes him to go into a grenade-spam loop), Warner's creations and Ash J. Williams by the Pizzaman (a personal favourite) all had a hand in finally pushing me towards making Jack Sparrow. I think TGM said it best when he said that he makes characters that he likes, it's a good philosophy, and keeps you interested during those long hours of sprite editing. ;)
