FF refuses to do Portrait changes. I swear it hates me
« on: March 30, 2009, 06:24:44 PM »
Alright, I've almost been driven to madness trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I am trying to use FighterFactory to simply replace a Portrait picture with another one for a character. I've googled various Tutorials, I've watched videos, I even read everything there is for FF.

Nothing.....will.....work. I either get a blank spot where it should be, the picture garbled in a bunch of weird colors, or the picture with anything black in it transparent.

Here's my example. I want to change the KI character, Saberwulf's, portrait. Using Photoshop, I made this nice and tidy 25x25 image: . I then exported that picture, trying a variety of output formats.

After replacing the default portrait in FF, I open up MUGEN and here is what I get:

BMP 24-Bit

PCX

PNG 8-Bit

PNG 24-Bit

As you can see, bmps or pcxs don't even show up for me. PNG 24 shows up, but anything black in the image becomes transparent. The only one that 'works' is PNG 8, but if I try to make the black part above his head transparent, it causes the entire image to become black.

So please, someone, anyone........what am I doing wrong! *cries*

It MUST be:

1. Any 256 colors Image.
2. Size doesn't matter. (At all  :P)
3. An Indexed Image.
4. .PCX (Very Important)

I used PhotoShop CS2 for some portraits.

Use FF to replace the portraits.

No need for a tutorial since it's so easy.
I love cheap chars, got any cheap char? Send it to me.
Special Thanks to Twon for my beautiful avy and Twon & shulbocka for the siggies.

That's some pretty halfway advice... I think he allready know he can "search all the posts for the answer" but why even post a response unless you at least show him a link to the post with the answer...  :D

@ godsfire, The problem is that before your try to load the picture into your fighter factory you need to reduce the colors to 256 color. You'll need some software to do this because it's not a function of "Paint" that comes with Windows. Photo Shop, Paint Shop Pro, al the higher end programs can do this for you or you can find somekind of shareware on the interent to do it (a lot of people use Gimp.)

Once you has your 256 color graphic you also need to be careful about transparent colors. when you actually look at your new 256 color palette for the image there is a box called index 0. Which ever color happens to be in that bax will be the transparent color when you import it to Mugen.

as for the problem you're having with the different file types, you're only getting the PNG to work becasue it's trying to convert it to 256 colors for you, but that just causes errors. You really need to do it yourself before you try to import it.

Okay guys, I've messed around with some and I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

Technology, since you say you use Photoshop as well, could you maybe just take a few screenshots on how you do it? Since I'd be doing the same thing, I think that would be my "ah ha!" moment.
