Final Fantasy Games you would suggest?
« on: January 13, 2009, 04:24:53 AM »
I'm looking to get into the final fantasy series... I've always enjoyed the RPG style but i've never come to own a FF game.. unless you count KH :P

So are there any titles you would suggest?

I have the following systems

Older Consoles:
NES
Snes
N64 (not sure if there were any FF titles for this but its worth a shot.)

Newer Consoles:

DS
Gamecube
Xbox 360
PS2

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Final Fantasy 6. also known as 3 on the snes.

Theres a ps1 version, a gba version also. Both titled with 6.

6 on the ps1 came bundled with chrono trigger.

6 is one of the best, if not, the very best final fantasy game.

Final Fantasy 1, 4, 6, 7, Tactics, 8, 9, 10, and 12. NES, SNES/PS1, and PS2. All of these you can and should play. Don't play: Final Fantasy 2, 3, 5, Mystic Quest, X-2, 11, Dirge of Cerberus, or FF Legends.

Also try Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Lufia, Lufia 2, Chrono Trigger, Chocobo Dungeon, Radiata Stories, Final Fantasy 12, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Seiken Densetsu Series, and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

What do you think legends was? They called it that because the ff name would sell in the us but it was actualy the first part of the mana searies.

Dont bother with Evermore, its not that great, same action tryle as mana but not done as well.

Becides, theres allot of good stuff out there ide recomend to ya, but this is just about final fantasy.

You totally reminded me to add Seiken Densetsu. I don't like the Gameboy versions.

I would go with FF6 as it was the best in my opinion at least...

I say play FF7 first since it's a fan favorite and easily a great game to get you acquinted with the Final Fantasy series, then play every other one.  Each FF has different styles of gameplay and challenge, but since FF 7 is kind of easy, but fun, it will help you figure FF games out.  My personal favorite is Final Fantasy 8, 6, and 12.

Hope this helps.

You want to play a game to get INTO the Final Fantasy series?

Try Final Fantasy VI.  It's easy to get into and it's the best in the series.  Final Fantasy IV and V are also really good but FFIV requires a lot of leveling up and FFV's job system may be tedious for newcomers.  I suggest getting the GBA version if you can but the SNES and PS versions are good, too.

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX are also good choices for getting into the series.  FFVII is relatively simple and very straightforward.  However, I personally didn't care for the whole materia system.  FFIX plays more like the original FF games only it has PS-quality graphics.  To this day, I still consider FFIX to be the prettiest FF title that still manages to retain the classic FF look that newer FF games seem to lack.

Once you finish with FFVI, FFVII, and/or FFIX, then you can try FFIV, FFV, and FFI.  Try to avoid the SNES version of FFIV since it leaves out a lot of things retained in the PS, GBA, and DS versions of the game.  PS or GBA versions of FFV are fine.  I recommend the GBA or PSP versions of FFI, which is a simple game that is short on story but still very fun.

You can also try FFVIII for the PS but the interface and gameplay in that title is a little complex.  If you enjoy the complexity, which I did, then you'll have fun with it.

Once you're done with all of that, you can then try FFII for the GBA and FFIII for the Nintendo DS, which are decent but somewhat lacking.

If... you're a big enough fan of the series at this point... I guess you could also try Final Fantasy X.  I didn't like it.  I disliked Final Fantasy X-2 even more so don't even bother with that one, unless you like torturing yourself (which I do when it comes to RPGs).  The Final Fantasy games really take a turn for the... different on the PS2 so expect really different games when you play FFX, FFXI, FFXII, etc.

Like many have already said, FF6 is probably the best place to start. It has the largest cast of playable characters (it's the only title that lets you play as a moogle!), a great story, lots of freedom in how you play the game, and TONS and TONS of optional quests and items to track down. This was the last title to use 5-character parties, which I still prefer over the current 3-character set-up. It even has a 2-player option where you can split up controlling party members during combat. As mentioned, the PS version comes bundled with Chrono Trigger, which is an outstanding FF-related title as well.

FF7 is also a great title, with some great gameplay (although managing materia can get tedious). This one is also home to the franchise's definitive characters (Cloud and Sephiroth), so if you want to know what all the buzz is about around them, go play this one.

FF4 (FF2 on the SNES) is a lot of fun, but pick up the DS or Playstation version. FFTactics is a personal favorite of mine, but the gameplay is totally different than any of the others. If you enjoy games that are a bit more open-ended, with tons of hidden stuff to search out, Tactics will be right up your alley.

Mystic Quest and X-2 should be avoided, unless you end up becoming a die hard FF fan.

Also, the game that got me into RPG's was Super Mario RPG.
Its done by squaresoft, the people who are known for Final Fantasy.
And it does include an optional boss thats from FF, so this might be one to get, to help ease you in into the genre.

Spidermew is right Super Mario RPG is still one of the greatest RPGs ever made.  You should give that a try.

I thought FFIV was the only title to have 5-character parties.  The rest either had 4- or 3-character parties.  But yeah, I prefer 4-character parties... unless I'm playing Super Mario RPG.   ;D

The boss was inspired by the Final Fantasy games.  Only the music is directly from Final Fantasy.  Final Fantasy IV, to be exact.

And yes, Super Mario RPG is SUPER-GREAT.

id suggest FFX, FF7, and FF6. FF12 is good but it tends to drag on in all departments. story, combat, grinding all the time
