Hi people,

I'm new at making characters but I've wanted to do this for a long time.

Basically, this is the same MvC Wolverine Capcom has made but with a twist, with a simple palette switch he will change between 6 very different costumes!

The costumes I decided to include are:
1) Capcom's popular blue & yellow costume (possible color updates).

2) Classic brown & yellow costume.

3) Current Astonishing X-Men / Avengers costume.

4) X-Force black & gray costume ( =P~).

5) Danger room X-Men costume (short sleeve version + blue gloves).

6) Possibly black & gold Ultimate style costume.


I already made a sample for 2 sprites to show off my idea, this is the model for all the costumes and also my first sprite edit! :w00t:


As for the boots, I'm planning to edit them so with the palette switch the "wings" will become transparent and they will look like the X-Force / Astonishing X-Men boots.




The thing is that I'm really a newbie in this and any help I can get would be more than welcomed, the more people joining in on this the faster this will be finished.
Experienced creators are of course welcomed, I could really use someone who will correct my work and the colors separations (it's very likely it needs a fix) and possibly manage the entire project.

I also considered to make this a public WIP, like EOH Batman, so please post your thoughts on issue as well! :)

I will probably have to re-do the sprites I've shown, then I will have answer to this question.

But anyway if the colors are separated right than there's no reason why it shouldn't work.

When it is finished, please included your rainbow palette in the folder so it will give people more options when making there own varient colors

You can change the color with palettes, but as soon as you actually change the sprites themselves, each costume would have to be released as a individual CNS file patch.

Awesome project (A lot of work though).  You are going have to be extra careful making all the sprites.

I don't see a reason why there would be a CNS for each costume.

I'm only changing the sprites once so it would apply to all costumes, with palettes change of course.

No it wouldnt, not the way he's editing the sprites, thats the point of the weird looking colors, its dynamic color seperation.

Because I'm a newbie at this the sprites you see here took me 2-3 hours to make.. ~X(

It would be very helpful if you could tell me the program you use and best method you use for this kind of thing plus a link to a tutorial if possible.

When Im making scarlet spider, I can get him to be all red with a blue sweater in about five minutes (that is after I edit out everything i dont want. Otherwise it would be 1 minute) using the replace color tool in photoshop, but I dont think that would work for you in this situation.

You can try this though.
1) Cut out the part of wolverine that you want to change a certain color
2) Paste it on a new window
3) In the new window, replace color
4) Paste the newly colored piece back onto the wolverine sprite.

I cant guarantee this will work because the replace color tool has given me problems in the past, but you can try it.

Well i wouldnt mind having one wolverene with all the mvc stuff that has such a dynamic costume change just from selecting alternet colors.

There is no fast way (being that this uses the same system as my dynamic Captian America). I suggest you go through all the sprites and do all the pink, then go through again and do all the green and continue that way. This is the fastest way.

The thing is after I did the whole sprite, I tried to make previews for all the costumes using the replace color, but certain parts which were supposed to be in a different color range (such as the olive middle section and the peach shoulders) changed to the same color (different tones too!!)  >:(

I want an advice how to avoid these and get about 18 different color ranges for the character which won't mix during the palette switches (tones too).



@Shin K DASH , I actually think that the Wolverine Capcom has done is pretty much perfect and all I'm adding is the other costumes (plus this is my first project ever.. doing the sprites alone will take me forever to make..)

My only goal here was to do the Astonishing, Traditional Blue & Yellow and his first costume. You threw the Real BRown costume in the mix which adds a whole another demension.

I don't like the small " ears " Acey . Just my preference though . I know his original costume had those smaller " ears " , so I never cared for it . I guess if I want huge ears that's what Wolvenom is for  ;*))

So how did you make sure that the different shades of the new color aren't too close? (so when you change palettes two tones of the new color won't change at the same time)

Depends on the tools you're using. I use Paint Shop Pro and I keep the base sprite open the entire time, then I pick the colors from the orginal sprite and apply them in each new edited sprite. that's how I make sure I get the correct colors, as for making sure your colors aren't too close, you need to decide that on the first sprite and stick with those colors. you have about 6 billion to chose from so you shouldn't run out of options.
