Boxing vs Martial Arts
« on: December 03, 2008, 08:31:29 AM »
ok so yesterday i was on youtube watching martial arts demonstrations and i noticed one that had a guy doing ryus moves it was awesome then i went to see what others thaught and it was flooded with wannabe gangsters saying they would knock him out in a real fight or anyone who does that jackie chan sh*t with boxing i honestly think theyd get there butt handed to them by a martial artist heres my reasons
1.martial arts is a very diverse fighting technique with many diffrent forms and styles while boxing is just punching and dodgeing
2.the defence of a martial artist consist of many forms a user of judo actually can use boxing as an advantage a majority of judo techniques are throws that involve you grabbing an opponents arm which is what a boxer uses nt just judo but mainly all martial arts involve defence as much as offence now boxing is mainly a hit and dodge or block style.
now what is YOUR opinion as to which style is better

I see where you're going with your question, but Boxing is a form of martial arts. Martial arts is basically a self-defense style or technique. So as far as "Boxing vs. Martial Arts", you'd have to be more specific. Boxing vs. Aikido? Boxing vs. Hapkido? etc.  :(|)

boxing is awesome but unless its in a ring it has its flaws because I mean come on in a street fight are you really not going to use your legs or what ever else you can to help you win so that would make it not boxing just someone you knows how to box fighting someone. So Boxing vs Martial Arts the boxer just using their boxing skill can win if there are set rules but in a all out battle where anything goes I dont see it happening

Boxing is more of a sport where as Martial Arts is a lifestyle...it's much more of a  complete training...if you put up two people who were great at both things the boxer would be killed LOL

Depends. We all know boxing as an in-ring sport, but martial arts has become the same thing. Judo, karate, Taekwondo, and so forth are now adapted to a sports atmosphere so those too are no good for street fighting. In essence, very few styles are focused on realistic street fighting nowadays.

With that being said, if you know a good teacher/school that focuses their curriculum to include teachings on how to adapt your style for realism fighting, then anyone can use any style for fighting in the streets. This goes for boxing, for alot of people are quick to use their hands more than their feet, and if you are in a real fight you will not box the same way in street, you will use instincts, environment, and other realistic tactics to compliment your boxing style to win. Same with Taekwondo. We're used to seeing more acrobatic and flashy stuff and think these are cool and what make a person tough. On the contrary, there is a reason to doing the flashy stuff, but the 'realistic' form will not look anywhere the same way. Principles will probably still be there, though.

Looking at the idea that a professional boxer would lose to a professional martial artist, you need to look at it from many angles. Boxers in general don't have good defense waist down, sow people with good leg skills can easily break down a boxer from bottom up. Plus a kick has longer reach. On the other hand, the minute a martial artist takes one leg off the ground, he's already sacrificed his balance, and can easily be taken down and submitted to a barrage of punches if he/she slips. On top of that, most kicks (excluding knees) are no good in close counters, and a punch is faster than a kick.

Like what MOTVN said, it's the practitioner who is able to make his style usable to win that counts, not style itself so to speak. You can learn over a 1000 techniques and still get your @$$ served by a pencil pusher or someone who's never been in a fight. Sounds strange? It's reality.

well ive boxed and done some martial arts training and I'd say boxing wins its so fundamental in actual fights you end up kicking you own butt more than the other persons trying to use martial arts but i will say martial arts will help you in a throwing/grappling situation

Capoeira is an excellent style because its unpredictable.  That guy was just an idiot.  His sensei is beating the sh*t outta him as we speak.

Now back to the original topic;  If an expert boxer fights an ameteur martial artist, the boxer would probrably win.  If it was the other way around the martial artist would prabrabl win.  it all depends on the fighter.  no one style is dominant over all.

Like some people have side it all depends on the situation and how well the person was trained. Anything can happen in an all out street fight. Say someone punches a guy out on the street, well the guy that got punched gets pissed and whips out a gun. Boom end of story. It all depends on situations a street fight can turn into anything really quick.

That's kinda true. You also could go from fighting one guy to the wole damn block at the drop of a hat (See Washington Heights LOL). But one on one, it's all on the fighter him/herself as to who'll have the better day. I'm a pretty good martial artist will a boxing background going in over 11 years, but I love good lo' street!!!

Well this is pretty apparent, at least to me...

Think of it this way, in boxing your trained to fight only with punches. No grappling, no kicking, no elbows or knees or even headbuts or eye gouging or biting (which are very effective tools for fighting, just not allowed in sports) . So its a limited fighting form. A boxer vs. someone that studied strikes along with grappling and other techniques would obviously be at a disadvantage. Not to say there's no way he could win, but it would not be a fight in his favor.

Any gangster type people who act tough are just cowards who run their mouth as a way to hide their personal inadequacies.

Yeah, I've always seen capoeira as a bs style, flash over substance. Something they romanticize for video games and movies. Kind of like drunken boxing.

It's more like agressive breakdancing and requires you to spend a good bit of your time off-balance, bad traits for any martial art.  *Iceman ThumbsDown!*
