This seems like a much better way of creating sprites.
I've always used MS Paint XP, but this would make things much faster and easier.

Im still new to this program so im having a bit of trouble, but how do you make the background color of your sprite transparent?

Whenever I made a sprite I always used a bright green background, but when editing and moving things around I need that transparent background.
How could I change my green background into a transparent one?

Like this

Make sure you click the advanced options when creating a new file and you click the menu box next to fill with and select transparency.

Im sorry I guess I wasnt very clear.
I already knew how to open on with the transparent background, but what I meant is that I want to remove the non transparent background from one of my sprites.

Like this one.

I wanted to open it in GIMP and then remove the solid green background. Making it easy to edit the sprites.

Well I just usualy manualy erase the backgrounds with the eraser tool, or i convert it to a 256 color pcx file, open it in fighter factory, make the background transparent there and save it as a .gif there.

If there is another way to do it, I havnt figured it out yet, im self taught in the use of GIMP.

This will show you how to convert the image to something you can use in fighter factory.

Awsome!  Just remember, always save as .gif or .png as jpg's will ruin quality of sprites

Well, Yeah.
If you watch the 6 part video tutoral on the front page of this topic you can  see how i turn mega man into fire man, but you dont have to do that, you could use the skills i try to teach to turn (for example) Hayato and M Bison and Dr. Doom into Darth Vader.
Its all a matter of how creative you want to be.

To get to the color picker, you double click the top color your using over on the menu window, its nomral black over white when you first start it up, double click the color and you can change it manualy.

The runtime environment should be on the same page.

Ide get a screen shot but snaggit isnt working.

right under gimp 2.2 theres the gimp and the GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment (version 2.10.13, for Windows 2000 and newer)

you need that.
