What's a Download Accelerator?

Does it just speed up a Download taking place?? Is there any downside in using one like in Megaupload?

well theres a good chance of you getting allot of spywere...
allot of the accelerators ive heard of are just spywere programs.. or come with some hidden ones..

Download accelerators such as downthemall! for firefox, downloads the chunks of data then after its done it merges the chunks of data to form a file. Normal downloading downloads the chunks while merging the chunks into a file.

That is pretty much what I know.

I've had a bad experience with them. When I was a kid back in 2000 (I was an Internet newbie) I got Download Accelerator Plus, and I was beginning to get into emulation. There were many romsites I couldn't get files of because of that cr@ppy program telling me "Download link could not be found", so I uninstalled it. I'm never getting one again.
