The Sony company nor the Playstation platform will not die as Sony has different products to keep them in the air. Such as HDTV sets, Surround Systems, etc...

@ATICE: If MGS4 was going to the 360 we would of heard it in production at E3 by now. :(|)

Obviously, you don't know that Sony is already losing money, because of how low the consumer response is to the PS3... They don't really have any new exclusives anymore, because mostly all of the so-called 'exclusive' games for the PS3, have already gone or are already going to have a 360 version.

What would be cool is if Microsoft would invent something better than Blu-Ray, or buy the Blu-Ray from Sony, and put it on their system... which would be an epic fail for the PS3, no doubt.

Quote from Wikipedia - Playstation 3 - Sales and Production Costs

The PlayStation 3's initial production cost is estimated to have been US$805.85 for the 20 GB model and US$840.35 for the 60 GB model.[70] However, they were priced at US$499 and US$599 respectively,[71] meaning that every unit was sold at an estimated loss of $250,[70] contributing to Sony's games division posting an operating loss of ¥232.3 billion (US$1.97 billion) in the fiscal year ending March 2007.[72] In April 2007, soon after these results were published, Ken Kutaragi, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, announced plans to retire. Various news agencies, including The Times[73] and The Wall Street Journal[74] reported that this was due to poor sales, whilst SCEI maintains that Kutaragi had been planning his retirement for six months prior to the announcement.[74]

In January 2008, Kaz Hirai, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, suggested that the console may start making a profit by early 2009 stating that, "the next fiscal year starts in April and if we can try to achieve that in the next fiscal year that would be a great thing" and, "that (profitability) is not a definite commitment, but that is what I would like to try to shoot for".[75] However, market analysts Nikko Citigroup have predicted that the PlayStation 3 could be profitable by August 2008.[76]

Since the system's launch, production costs have been reduced significantly as a result of phasing out the Emotion Engine chip and falling hardware costs.[77][78] The cost of manufacturing Cell microprocessors has fallen dramatically as a result of moving to the 65 nm production process,[79][78] and Blu-ray diodes have become cheaper to manufacture.[77][80] As of January 2008, each unit costs around $400 to manufacture.[81][82]

On January 7, 2007, Sony met its goal of shipping 1 million units to North America.[83] Just over a week later, on January 16, 2007, Sony confirmed they had shipped 1 million units in Japan, bringing the worldwide total to over 2 million shipped.[84] As of April 1, 2007, approximately 5.5 million units had been shipped worldwide. (By June 30th, 2007, XBOX360 sold over 12 million units.)[72]

The PlayStation 3 is currently behind its competitor systems, the Wii and the Xbox 360, in total worldwide sales. In Japan during 2007, the Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 by as much as 6 to 1 in some months.[85][86][87] The PlayStation 3 has been more successful in Japan in 2008; 2,009,492 PlayStation 3 consoles were sold; outselling the Xbox 360, which was released almost a year earlier than its competitors, which sold 602,558 units. Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were outsold by the Wii, which sold 5,695,579 units, according to Famitsu/Enterbrain.[67][68]

From October 2007 to November 2007, sales of the PlayStation 3 went up by 285% in the United States.[88] Sony CEO Howard Stringer attributed the growth to a price cut and Nintendo's inability to manufacture the Wii system at a rate high enough to meet public demand.[89]

As of January 1, 2008, the PlayStation 3 has sold 3.25 million units in the United States according to the NPD Group,[90][91][92] 1,673,063 in Japan according to Enterbrain,[93][94] over 180,000 in Australia according to GameSpot,[95] and an estimated 2.8 million in Europe according to Electronic Arts.[96][97] Total worldwide sales as of January 1, 2008 are 10.49 million according to Sony.[98][99]

In the United States, the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time in January 2008 according to the NPD Group.[100][101][102] A day prior to the NPD sales figures being released Microsoft said that the Xbox 360 had shortages for that month in the US.[103][104][105] Prior to January 2008 the PlayStation 3 had been a consistent third behind the Wii and the Xbox 360 in US sales.[104] The PlayStation 3 also outsold the Xbox 360 in February 2008,[106][107] but was then outsold by the Xbox 360 in March 2008 according to the NPD Group.[108] In June 2008, PS3 again outsold Xbox 360 by a margin of 405,500 to 219,800.[109]

So.. Basically the end is near for the Playstation 3... the system is only hanging by a thread, because of the new Blu-Ray technology... that's it...

@Cyclsym: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Blu-ray_Disc_devices
There are tons of others than the PS3 that should work just fine. Samsung is a very good company, and I'm sure there stand alone Blu-Ray Players are just fine.

Well I disagree on the stuff about PS3 games playing better then there Xbox360 counter-parts. Watch the channel G4, watch Xplay on that channel. Look on Gametrailers.com watch there comparison videos on the xbox360 and ps3 multiplatform games. The ps3 graphics look watered down compared to the 360 counterparts. Plus a big let down on the ps3 is the mandatory install. You have to buy a new HDD every couple of years if you still wanna play the old games you loved. But none-the less I have a 360 and will be getting a PS3. So atm I may be alittle biased but I will have both of them together in the same room, in about 3 months(October 31st baby!!!!---- 18 ) ok im done now go about your business.

xPreatorianx you don't need to buy a new HDD every few years for the PS3...

@ATICE: Sony invented the blu-ray, they own the shares in the stock market. Would Sony honesty sell the right to incorprate blu-ray into the Xbox to Microsoft? Sony help founded the blu-ray format. See the wikipedia page here.

and Blu-Ray=does not equal better and longer games ......   Blu-Ray=Mandatory installs
I don't get it if Blu-Ray has more storage capacity doesn't that mean you can have more content on one disc.

Ok, if Microsoft did that the consumers would have to buy a new system or add-on which would make it more expensive. And do you think by the time that happens it will still be "cheaper" than the PS3? And that new format will many problems for game developers like a new price-tag for games.

The ps3 graphics look watered down compared to the 360 counterparts.
So why does GTA4 look muddy and dark compared to the PS3? And why does DMC4 look much better on the PS3 than the 360?

There is no file size limit for the developers have to be limited to in the playstation store. I got demos that are over 1GB in size that I downloaded off from the PSN store. Plus themes and wallpapers are free to download.

Uh... it doesn't... It looks much better than the PS3 version, actually.

It doesn't DMC4 looks slightly sharper on 360 while the PS3 version textures are a little blury
http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/9/4/1/0/2/dmc15.jpg.jpg

look at Berial's chest

and GTA4 looking better on ps3 is mainly an opinion..here is a video comparing the two and the 360 version looks better
http://www.videogamer.com/features/article/29-04-2008-389.html

and look how superior Assassin's creed is on 360 compared to PS3
http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/8/8/4/6/1/ss_preview_1080p4.jpg.jpg?slideshow=true

this is because Xbox 360 has a superior graphics card and GPU

the PS3's 7800GTX has less raw processing power than the Microsoft Xbox 360 GPU.

and the Blu-Ray may have more storage capacity but is a slower optical disc format and it takes longer to read the data off it's disc.

@ ATICE, the only reason I have not bought a standalone Blu-Ray player is because all the up to date ones with all the latest Java features are expensive as hell........

There are so many small differences in the PS3 and 360 that I just don't care for graphics really. All I want to do is enjoy my next-gen system.

I have played the 360 before but the playstation controller is what I grown up with excluding my SNES.

XBOX360 is in lead, obviously, because of all the money that the company has generated. There are a lot of games that are more entertaining on the 360 than on the PS3. This is also due to their 'at-times exclusives' (meaning there are rarely any of them, but they are really good)... an example would be Dead Rising as an XBOX360 'exclusive'.

Well yea of course it is in the lead......it had a year start. If you look at just US sales alone Xbox still has firm ground, BUT you look at world wide sales. Japan HATES the 360, 360 is losing ground in Europe as the PS3 is gonna catch up to it within a year at current pace and the PS3 has sold more than the 360 this year in the US. The fact it has more entertaining games leans on more of the fact it had a year lead. FYI last time I checked, Devil May Cry 4 has sold more on the PS3 worldwide than the 360.

Quote
Playstation 3 is already going down in the market, because of the company putting the price of the console system way too low. The Playstation 3 (already!) is to be rumored to be taken off of shelves within the next year due to low consumer response and rarely any new exclusives. (Do not settle this argument with me here, if you have one... please PM me if you wish to argue...)

All consoles sale at a loss, they make it up by software sales. As for those rumors, it is probably not true as it is doing better and Europe and Japan. In Europe as mentioned, it should past the 360 in sales. I have no idea where you heard that rumor from, but it simply isn't true as the PS3 is selling pretty well overall. Again, check VG Chartz for this. I am putting this out there so that people aren't missed informed.

Quote
Also, Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming for the XBOX360... it is not only rumored... but is already in production... Am I saying that it will be better than the PS3 version? Most likely not, because the PS3 can hold way more memory, and etc., which is why I am expecting at least 2 game discs for the 360 version...

So far you were proven wrong on this. You posted 2 links, one of which was a google search and another link that was posted in 2007. M$ would have announced it at E3 that they would have MG4. I mean it is MGS 4, they would love to announce a HUGE game like this as soon as possible. I mean it is rumored that Star Ocean 4 is gonna be on the PS3. It is rumored that Mass Effect is gonna be on the PS3. It is just that, rumors, take it as a grain of salt.

I love the whole ''360'' was released first argument

look at Wii it's outselling 360 and PS3 and it came out last  :DxDie

MGS4 will not be on 360
Mass Effect will not be on PS3 it's published by Microsoft not even the second coming of Christ could get it on ps3....a sequel could be on PS3 but not the first

and Kojima is a Sony Fanboy so MGS will not be on 360

I love the whole ''360'' was released first argument

look at Wii it's outselling 360 and PS3 and it came out last  dies laughing

MGS4 will not be on 360
Mass Effect will not be on PS3 it's published by Microsoft not even the second coming of Christ could get it on ps3....a sequel could be on PS3 but not the first

and Kojima is a Sony Fanboy so MGS will not be on 360

The Wii attracts a more causal crowd than the PS3. Also the 360 and the PS3 are going after the same hardcore gamer crowd more so than the casual gamer crowd (little kids, old people, etc.), like the Wii is. I am not saying that the Wii is a kiddy console, it is just a more diverse console. Since the argument was about the 360 over the PS3 and not the Wii over the PS3, it still stands that the 360 was out before the PS3.

As for Mass Effect, I too don't think it will be on the PS3, but I was simply trying to point that rumors are just that, rumors. Kojima might be a Sony fanboy, but Konami has the final say. If they REALLY want to make it a  multiplat, they can.

I agree with most of what you said, but I wouldn't dare say the wii was diverse.... not yet anyway, it only has a handful of proper games.
Until it has more real games (as opposed to full length mini games) it'll never be "diverse" imho.

I don't own a Wii, but I have played on one, call me old fashioned but I just don't like the controls. me & the missus were decided at xmas what to get, the wii was out straight off the bat, so it was down to 360 or PS3.
she's a playstation fangirl and hated the original xbox so we chose the PS3 & I'm glad we did.

I think the PS3 has the better exclusives, Halo 2 put me off Halo 3 & I'd hate to miss out on games like Little Big Planet or God of War 3.

tbh, from what I've seen graphically most of the multi platform games (I'm talking PS3 & 360 here as the Wii is like a gamecube on steds) look pretty much the same. I don't have HDTV so I don't know if that's where the proof lies.

I'd recommend you to grab a HDTV as the scale makes it truly worth on a 2 year old 34 inch 1080i HDTV with discolortion on the right(aka whites show as a blured yellow). 8-}

The way I see it is...

#1 - XBOX360
#2 - Nintendo Wii
#3 - PS3

If Microsoft becomes incredibly dull within the next year, then the Wii may actually have a chance... but otherwise the Wii is no where near better than the 360. I would say that it beats the PS3, though. It's simplier, & fun and easy to use. Quite a few games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy have bumped it up to 2nd place.

Again, (this is my opinion, so don't be an idiot) PS3 is only hanging on by a thread, because of the Blu-Ray... mostly all of the exclusives are no longer exclusives and have been made for either the 360 or the Wii... It's just fact... In the end, I think Sony should re-consider what they're doing with the PS3... it's really been shipped more, because it's newer and more popular than the 360...

This is the end of my posts for this topic, because really... it's gone on long enough...

Again comparing the wii and 360/ps3 is like comparing apples and oranges, you need to eat both to have a healthy diet.
This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life!
