I don't want Windows Media Player reading my music folder!!!

Hey ok... so I bought a new computer... And actually bought a legal version of windows for the first time in my life... did all the updates and everythings fine... except. Windows media player automatically imported all my files in my "My Music" folder and my "My Videos" folder! I don't want this. I don't want to use WMP, I don't want anything to do with that program. I don't want the other user of my computer to be able to access that stuff, not to mention the fact that I don't want any of those types of files even being accessed by a Microsoft program.

Ok I looked all over in the options, and it seems like it prevents me from disassociating those folders with the player. I like to use Winamp. A bit of an Old School version actually. And its really nice and simple. You tell it where to look, it does it. It doesn't just decide these things and say that's that. I think my computer updated WMP to version 11? I just let it do what it wanted seeing as I've bought a legal working windows XP. Was it a mistake to let WMP update itself? I don't trust Microsoft, I'm already being sent letters by the MPAA and Viacom monthly (details none of your buisness), and I don't want this program to have access to those things. Like I really trust microsoft not to anonymously give every piece of information they can get their hands on to anyone and everyone.

So is the only option I have to change up the folders? I like having all my stuff tidy like that, accessible from the start menu. Anybody know how to completely deny WMP 11 access to these folders? The only thing I use it for is to play random video files on my desktop before I transfer them and put them in playlists in winamp. But just running it once seemed to import all this info.

You could always remove the exe file.

ok heres what i would do...

A) Disable WMP's executable file from being able to be launched at the first place!
....If you have Windows XP Pro, follow this:
1. Start -> Run -> Type "secpol.msc" (no quotes) then hit "Enter"
2. Click on "Software Restriction Policy" (on the left)
3. Right-click on "Additional Rules" (on the right) -> Choose "New Path Rule"
4. Now click "Browse" and find your WMP's executable file and click "OK"
5. Make sure the "security level" is set to "Disallowed" and click "OK"
6. Now you if you try to run WMP's executable file, windows wont allow you at all! pretty nice huh!?

B) Place back your music and videos where you want them to be!

C) Install Winamp (i also use that!)

D) EnJoY the fact that now, you don't have anything to do with that program anymore in your life!!!

Are you kidding?!? The most horrible intrusive program ever made. It is #1 in my all time most hated programs. Don't even get me started on why, because you might just commit suicide for using it!

Anyways, my VideoLan player plays .mov format perfectly

I just right clicked, Properties, open with Winamp, similar to Eskro's method.

2. Then go to open with then -> Choose Program (at this point make sure you have the program you want to use for your music files installed)
3. In the Choose program menu choose the program you want to use(if its not in the list click browse and look for the .exe file) when you found it check the box at the bottom saying "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
4. Tada WMP will no longer handle your music another program will, but make sure that you do this for every type of file (ex. ,.mpg,.wmv,.wma., etc...)

Nah man associating them with Winamp is no problem man, its just if I happen to open WMP with some file that wants to be opened exclusively with that, WMP then imports all the stuff in my music folder without asking me if its ok to do so. And when it auto updates itself it takes back associations of certain files and I don't realize it.
