Making a character...
« on: July 10, 2008, 09:09:29 PM »
So, where do I start? I want to use Fighter Factory and I have all the sprites thanks to Kong's Magneto COTA sprites. But how do I code them and implement them with Fighter Factory?

I'm making my first character too, but im spriting him still, i would say the best place to start is the docs folder in your mugen folder, there are some tuts in there, and lists of what things in a CNS and CMD do to use as reference.  you can also use kfm for reference although i hate when people tell me that. lol.

i would say start small, and start from a template. first get everything movement-wise implemented.  make your char be able to stand, walk, crouch, jump, block, dash. ect.  once you get this the way you want it just slowly work your way up. start with standing punches. they are easy to put in using fighter factory to help you with the code, then finish all the standard moves. once you get your character to that point, where he can be beaten up convincingly, move convincingly, and punch and kick convincingly.  then add specials, supers, and what have you.

the biggest thing i can say is don't overwhelm yourself.  there are people on this forum who make creation seem simple, but there are people on this forum who have been creating for years.
just work your way from simple to complex and ask for help if you have a more specific problem, because as good as the people on the forum have been to me and others, at no point are any of them going to walk me or you through every step of the process.

also don't make it your first instinct to ask for help, odds are someone has had the problem you are having before you did, look through the tut and help section, and don't forget that imt has a search engine worked into the forum at the top of the page.

goodluck with your character.

Thanks. I'll look through those docs and see if I can get started.

Ist thing you can do is pick a good template. Infinity, and Scruffy both have their templates released for open Source use that have all the basics already done. What you can then do is swap your new sprites with the stick figure, or mannequin just so you can get him on screen. You do that by clicking the change button on the toolbox on your left hand side when your in the sprites tab.

The 2nd step is adjusting the animations which is the red cutboard tab in Fighter Factory. You have can add frames to the animations, and create new animations, again using the left side toolbox when your in the animation tab. I'd suggest checking out some tutorials, and asking a lot of questions. Theres a lot of trial and error, and thats just the basics.

After you get that far I would suggest getting a potts character, and see if you can take one of the moves from his character, and transfering it to your new character, it will teach you a lot about code, learning what does what in the script.

Coding from scratch is possible, but I think youd need some background in computer coding, or view a lot of tutorials.

Okay I have Kong's Magneto sprites but do I have to do something to them first or can I just put them in Fighter Factory?

I would swap one sprite (make sure, and uncheck the shared palette box), and open up the palette and save Magneto's Pal over the template palette, that way you wont have color issues when you swap in the sprites. After that, go back and re-check the shared palette box.

When you swap sprites they dont always line up right, so just make sure each frame is lined up properly, Im sure you can check Kongs x, and y axis in his character if youre not sure how one is supposed to line up.
