MIDI help
« on: February 27, 2008, 11:48:18 PM »
I've been checking out different message boards to see if I can get some help on this issue.  With each thread I make, I learn more about the problem.

Okay, so here's the thing... I am using MIDI files for music in my MUGEN.  There are a couple problems, though.

A. MIDI files tend to stutter during the periods in which MUGEN experiences slowdown or other problems that affect performance.

B. MIDI files sometimes play differently on MUGEN than in the other programs I have on this computer that can play MIDI files.  Sometimes, I can't even hear the music being played or the notes come out sounding completely different.  The one sequence I've encountered of Threed infested with zombies from the game Earthbound sounds horrendous in MUGEN but not in Winamp.

(To hear the MIDI file, go to vgmusic.com > click on Music Menu > click on Super Nintendo > click on A-F > perform a search on the page for "Threed (zombies).")

Any help/tips/suggestions?  I figure maybe there's something I can do in the Plugins folder but I'm not too savvy in that department.

Advice from another site took me here:  http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=40388.0

However, after installing the plugins, the only change I noticed is that the MIDI files playing during a game stutter less often.  I still have the problem of MIDI files not sounding the same in MUGEN as they do in Winamp.  And I'm wondering if the stutter problems have anything to do with the memory configuration in mugen.cfg.  I originally had all the memory options set to free up memory and increase load time (I don't mind the wait).

By the way, I'm using Vista and Winmugen Plus.

After asking for some help from members of a MIDI sequencing site, it seems that MUGEN does not support the bank change messages in certain MIDI files.  Could this be fixed somehow?  For more information on that, you can click here (long entry):

Does Winamp use a plug-in that you can move over to your mugen installation area?

I don't know.  I don't really know about plugin stuff or how it works.  I guess I can try that at some point to see if there's a difference.
