A problem with posts
« on: April 02, 2013, 12:26:17 PM »
I am making this topic in response to how many of the posts on this forum are what I would consider spam (or at least reserved for spam games) and how people tend to get off topic way to easily.

The first problem is the one that pisses me off the most, it’s as if people either just want to up their post count or they feel they have to say something but don’t know what to say, so they  just slap down the “Good post”/ “ Salute” emoticon and get it over with. I mean what’s the point in even posting if you have nothing to say. I guess people don’t want to say what has already been said, but the major problem with this is that besides just posting an emoticon people quote someone that just said something that they liked, and either put the “good post” or second, or agreed. I really wouldn’t mind this so much if it didn’t happen so darn much, I have seen entire pages of this; as if not a single person could think of what to say. That being said I hope more people will think about what to say or say nothing at all.

The second problem doesn’t happen as often and doesn’t make me as mad, but I see it as the bigger problem. You can go into a topic and see a page of stuff that has nothing to do with the topic at all, only to go to the last page and find out that someone said something that made someone inclined to join in, or said something that they didn’t like so they “have” to argue with them. What makes me very mad is when a moderator or admin does it, I mean they should know better.

I hope that the people that read this post will take the time to think about what they post, and help make a better forum.

I think that an easy way to overcome these problems is t make it a rule that posts cannot be one or two words, I hope it will not come to that though.

Im very guilty of many of the things you stated. I too hate it when people trail off topic. I tend to go back and read ALLOT of the threads i post in and the comments i post off topic p!$$ me off as well. Yes Rage rages at Rage.  My thing here is and maybe im wrong but tho this does happen ALLOT. That being off topic the threads tend to get back on track. I noticed that the off topic does cause people to argue too. BUT I think that the way it is good even tho it can be a bit annoying. People seem civil and able to squash most disagreements themselves. which is why i believe mods dont step in and fix or just decide to join in the conversation. In the past IMT was allot more tight about staying on topic and it really made the forum unpleasant. It caused allot of argument when mediators jump in and edited, stop an conversation. I prefer the way it is now. This topic you posted where is something that has my attention because over bearing mods cause me to lose several close friend here. Its much more relaxed these days. I can spend hours online if there are people to talk to.

Now the emotion con abuse and coping others post........I dont know where i stand. I post the "good post" and "enjoying the show" solo because i want to show people ever tho i dont have anything to say at the moment im watching and support what they are doing. For me the emotion cons say my words for me. That what they are made for. Same goes with copying others post. If i have something to say but someone said it already i guess i could post saying" i agree with such and such..... but dont really want to. But if its deemed bad taste i will cease. I do agree tho that it is annoying to see these kind of post tho.

Lastly Sometimes a few words can say allot.

I think this is just the nature of conversations. Discussions morph and shift as new ideas are brought to light, so it's natural for a conversation to start with a topic like "Who Is Your Favorite Mega Man Character?" but evolve into a discussion on why Bass ruined the franchise (just an example. I love Bass.) I know a lot of topics veer way more off-topic than that, but that's still just the nature of human conversation. Nobody posts something totally out of left field. Anything they say is relevant to the post above theirs, relevant to the one above that, and so on and so forth. The forums I've visited which rigidly force a conversation into the one topic often have very shallow discussions and aren't much fun to be around.

As for the first point, the emoticon usage and quotes and what-not, I find that to be one of the attractions IMT has over the majority of the other message boards, all of which tend to take themselves too seriously. The fact that one can post an emoticon like that, basically complimenting a person for the intelligence or content of their post, I think it builds a relaxed and less-rigid atmosphere and a sense of community and openness. Instead of forcing the members to fill this specific "Polite Society" role, IMT's members are allowed to just say what they feel in however manner they feel to express it.

Which, yes, includes your expression of distaste for this type of conversation.

Regardless, I feel that while IMT does away with the stifling quality control of so many forums, there are still rules in place to attempt to keep discussions at the least civil. The resulting forum is one which is typically non-hostile while permitting the expression of almost every opinion in almost every manner and regardless of quality, which is the epitome of free speech.

I started rambling here, so extract from this what you will.

I can say for myself i been frowned at in the past for making LOOOOOOONG essay posts. lol  but i have seen over the many years people post various ways and lengths. IMT is a comfortable place of discussion . Its gotten alot livelier,  diverse people and with that comes various personalities and in discussions those both come to the front line of the topics. I dont mind using an emoticon to show my expression without using a full essay speech to say it. If i agree with a post someone made and said pretty much everything i would have said , i use the "good post" emoticon and maybe a few choice words of agreement. If i break any rule of using them then i should be corrected. if not.. then to the fun it is , just dont abuse them. lol

as said too most off topic discussions always found themselves right back on track but most of those were part of the topic just some not as specific. Arguments happen and so far they have been handled alot better than before awhile ago. IMT is more than just a bunch of mugen people , its a home to alot of us, its friends and even more a family. I love IMT the way it is and has remained for quite awhile now. It can only get bnetter as long as people know to behave themselves properly within the rules here asnd as well have fun but dont be troublemakers. I love my good debates and the thing is being civil about them and not bashing and name calling to the others because they do not share your same stance and view on the topic.

well i am done.. peace and enjoy the IMT party ....it lasts forever. :w00t:
