Throughout the marketing campaign for Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel,' it has been made very clear that the General Zod (Michael Shannon) would be the only villain. Well as it turns out, perhaps that is not the case. It seems there will be a second iconic Superman antagonist who will at least be appearing in the movie, if not playing a significant role in the story. Be forewarned, as tightly under-wraps as this piece of information has been up to this point, it could be considered a major spoiler. If your goal is to go into 'Man of Steel' as blind as possible, read no further.
It looks like Lex Luthor is in fact going to be turning up in DC's summer tentpole film. There were rumors circulating, rumors that earned at least a small amount of credibility when screenwriter David S. Goyer cryptically mentioned in an interview that no one involved with the production had ever denied Luthor's involvement in the first place. Now AICN has broken that actor Mackenzie Gray will be playing Lex in the film. Interestingly enough, Gray played a Luthor clone on the Superman TV series 'Smallville.' His version of Lex is purported to be ambitious and ego-driven.
This is interesting news. Once again, they went to great lengths to keep this under wraps, and one has to wonder how substantial this role will be in 'Man of Steel.' Obviously, Zod is still going to be the primary foe, and frankly that's the way it should be. We've been bombarded with Lex Luthor over the cinematic life of Superman. He was never really out of the picture, which makes sense considering that he's Superman's arch nemesis, but I mean honestly. Does every single Batman movie feature The Joker? If Lex is really showing up in 'Man of Steel,' it needs to be in a small cameo just to remind us that he is present in the Superman universe; a prison visit perhaps. Not only do I hope Luthor doesn't have a central role in 'Man of Steel,' but I further hope he's not even used as a cliffhanger bridge to the next movie. There are so many villains in the Superman rogues gallery, why do they so stalwartly focus on Zod and Luthor? That being said, I'm excited to see where he turns up.
