Whats that TV show?

There's a show i cant remember the name of.
It was from the early 90's, it was set in a post apocoliptic future.
Some virus or something turned most of humanity into monster men, and the survivors banded togeather in the last city or something.
This virus also caused the survivors to be genticly uncompatable with eachother, and to figure out who can mate with whom safely they all have to wear these jewl thingies. The jewls turn colors and if your blue you can mate with the other blues, reds on reds, ect.....
And this causes us to explore class issues and couples being torn apart because now they cant mate witheachother eventhough they were married before the muk hit the fan.
Also there was one smart monster man who in the first epp becomes part of the city's population, his jewl is black and he's the only one with that color.
I think it was a basic cable or late night hour long drama/action show.
Can anyone think of the name of it?
