There is some debate on the authenticity, but the cameraman wasn't shocked because he was at a distance and not in the open like the old man.

And rubber doesn't absorb electricity like most believe it does, it's the metal. Someone would have to be holding onto some metal while being struck for the electricity to make a circuit through them without being fatal. If someone let go of the metal while being struck the electricity would be shot out their body and probably kill them.

If you look closely he toppled over, so it couldn't have been a slip and fall, and yes light is faster than sound, though he was pretty close.

exactly! i was looking to see if that happened but the umbrella was in full tact.

@ azareal188 & dravenshadows.. obviously he was too old to do the whole arms open and absorb it while still standing. . knock him right on his tush! he has an  umbrella sword i figure.  he became the only ONE and didnt know it.

Rubber isn't known to "absorb" electricity. It's known to do the opposite. Rubber isn't a connductor, and so it blocks and deflects electricity, which is why it can protect you if there's enough of it.

The sound heard was not thunder. It was the impact of the lightning with the ground.

The bystanders weren't electrocuted because the lightning had entered the ground and, given that this is a city, probably continued via an underground circuit of pipes.

Whether the umbrella was or was not fried depends entirely on the completion of the circuit. If all of the lightning managed to pass through the umbrella into the man before the umbrella was moved, no harm would come to the tool. This is the same reason that the clothes are not obliterated in lightning victims.
