Can you help me decide: PS3 or laptop?
« on: April 15, 2008, 08:17:45 PM »
I'm planning to get something but it's too hard for me to decide. What'd you think?

If possible I'd like a PS3 owner tell me what you can do with a PS3 besides playing PSX, PS2 and PS3 games. :)

The ps3 can install linux in settings, browse internet, and install custom themes after the v2.0 system update(I have a GT5:P theme made by alba).

Oh yeah I almost forgot the PS3 plays blu-ray movies(one lf the cheapest player's you can get).

If you get the 40GB its not backwards compactable with ps2 or ps1(80GB has BWC with ps2 and ps1).

PS: You can switch in a newer 2.5 inch HDD on the PS3.

if you get a notebook powerful enough, you might be able to emulate up to PS2/Dreamcast/(NGC?)...i would pick the laptop thinking in the near future as an investment...besides when PS3 leaves the big market for a next gen console, you will need to change it eventually...besides at the laptop you could play PC exclusive games that weren`t in PS2(for example,Halo to name one :D)

Laptop, for a couple of good reasons.

Unless you can find a early edition PS3, it's not gonna have backwards compatability, whether it's a 40 or 60GB.

Yeah, you can instal Linux on it, but it's a b**** to get stuff running the way you want it to, and rather hard to find docs on that, even though SONY said the system is open source.

Games aren't that great either. My roommate used to have a PS3 and the only games worth playing on it are Uncharted, Haze, Resistance, and Metal Gear Solid 4, which isn't even out yet. Uncharted has no multiplayer, and resistance is medicore.

I can't justify to anyone spending 400 dollars at the end of the day for an overglorified Blu-Ray player. Buy a stand-alone Blu-Ray player later when the price drops after HD-DVD is completely out of the picture.

Besides, with a laptop you get Mugen on the go.  :w00t:

If you really need a new laptop then get one with 3GB of ram because of vista's power sucking "features".

Yeah 3 gigs is slowly becoming the norm with games like Crysis. Nah stick with XP for now, i mean with the extra ram consumption you could use it towards something more use full (And getting a vista just for the directx 10 upgrade isn't really a wow factor to me). If your just getting a system to
play games on strictly then i would go with a ps3... But if you want down the line to be able to customize your rig with the latest up to date equip then i would go with a alienware laptop, and not just for gaming but because games demand so much these days that the extra hardware thrown into the alien laptop would make other ram hungry programs work well also. Heck example my girls laptop had a radeon x600 series gp card in it... i know wow ancient... and i installed a x800 series and theres a big difference, but with that you would also have to upgrade your mobo and proc <--- dam pentium 4's suck for gaming.
So in the end Ps3 just for gaming and ...... GOD OF WAR III
But laptop for future upgrading and investment (But also know this road will lead you eventually down a path where you will have to dish out some money down the line for future upgrades... well actually thats obvious)

With Assassin's creed you are recommended to have 3GB anyways.

Too much specs-analyzing has got my mind messed up. I guess I'll go for a laptop, but I doubt there's Alienware here in Argentina. My dad would recommend Dell Computers, he has a Dell laptop and says it's great.

So I feel a little more inclined for a laptop. But surely, with all the bad luck I have, when I get it you will all have changed your minds if new kick-@$$ PS3 games come out.

Dell sucks, but a laptop is the best way to go. PS3 hasn't done as well as Sony thought it would, plus a laptop would be useful for school and other constructice things.

and that´s the same point of a laptop over a console...unless you can have both,a computer or laptop is always better investment

I'd say get a ps3 because I don't even like laptops. It's just I had a lot of horrible experiences with laptops at school and it just gets tedious after awhile. I much rather prefer a old traditional pc over a laptop.

Anyways the reason I'm going with ps3 is because it's the cheapest blu-ray player out on the market, and you can download old games that you may have enjoyed, which saves time from looking for them at the local gamestop. The network gameplay is free of course. Also you don't have to buy a charger for your controller because the ps3 comes with a usb cable which charges the controllers battery (this is pretty good because I had spent a total of 60usd on battery chargers for my wii and 360). You can upload mp3's to your ps3 but there is no custom soundtrack feature. Also you can browse the internet with the ps3.

Here in Argentina US$1 = $ 3. So it would cost about $15000. Definitely not my league. :DxDie

:-??, but my dad knows a lot about computers.

yeeeaaaahhhh.....

I don't think he has a huge budget to spend.......

The online play on the ps3 is free because it uses 8 processors to handle the load of online play.

Although a laptop is a better choice if you want to work with a more powerful computer.

I gotta say its not cheap where you live, where a 40GB PS3 is $400 here but it would cost you $1,200 where you live. :o
