More Active Sun Means Nasty Solar Storms Ahead

The sun is about to get a lot more active, which could have ill effects on Earth. So to prepare, top sun scientists met Tuesday to discuss the best ways to protect Earth's satellites and other vital systems from the coming solar storms.


Solar storms occur when sunspots on our star erupt and spew out flumes of charged particles that can damage power systems. The sun's activity typically follows an 11-year cycle, and it looks to be coming out of a slump and gearing up for an active period.


"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity," said Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division. "At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss."

People of the 21st century rely on high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. But smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications can all be knocked out by intense solar activity.


A major solar storm could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina, warned the National Academy of Sciences in a 2008 report, "Severe Space Weather Events—Societal and Economic Impacts." [Photos: Sun storms.]


Luckily, much of the damage can be mitigated if managers know a storm is coming. That's why better understanding of solar weather, and the ability to give advance warning, is especially important.


Putting satellites in 'safe mode' and disconnecting transformers can protect electronics from damaging electrical surges.


"Space weather forecasting is still in its infancy, but we're making rapid progress," said Thomas Bogdan, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo.


Eyes on the sun


NASA and NOAA work together to manage a fleet of satellites that monitor the sun and help to predict its changes.


A pair of spacecraft called STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) is stationed on opposite sides of the sun, offering a combined view of 90 percent of the solar surface. In addition, SDO (the Solar Dynamics Observatory), which just launched in February 2010, is able to photograph solar active regions with unprecedented spectral, temporal and spatial resolution. Also, an old satellite called the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), which launched in 1997, is still chugging along monitoring winds coming off the sun. And there are dozens more dedicated to solar science.


"I believe we're on the threshold of a new era in which space weather can be as influential in our daily lives as ordinary terrestrial weather." Fisher said. "We take this very seriously indeed."

And a increase in Solar activity also means that it's going to get much hotter...and it will really suck to live in the south when it does happen.

I don believe a word scientist say    a majority of the time these guys are wrong and since they work with the government, the government can be tellin them 2 say certain things so that the government can destroy parts of the earth and wat not but have a spokes person 2 make it look legit  I believe in god and when i heard the guy who made the theory of evolution said he believes in god before he died and that the government wanted him 2 make that up... This i do know. I used to watch conspiracey theories with Jessie the body. so trust i do know that the government have huge devices that can make earthquakes n weather changes called harp . But i dont sleep on just all the news...some of that stuff is pretty accurate. as per this crazy heat n cold conditions lately well that is pretty odd....The goverment cant control the sun on a clear blue day...but anyway its a thought tho

But anyway this why all that solar sh*t is happening...


The pattern here is now off cycle now. The Heat session started hella late. its like a 2 year delay er somethin....if u do the math and the science theres a pattern there. But now its off cuz the sun decided to stay a bit silent and cold for a bit longer than usual. It was like a Mini ice age to a degree. some years before it was a lot colder than usual in most places and it didnt have these flares (like now) that usually come out when it has to bring that heat on. So now the scientists cant really predict whats gonna happen next but they already got a trick up their sleeves to monitor all that. Still in all though when the sun finally goes full Blast from that long slumber its gonna jack up a lot of satellites n sh*t electrical on earth from how they figured it. but they are making precautions on some stuff so we wont be in much bad shape. but still that heat is really gonna be somethin and if u live in a part of the country thats usually hot, it gonna be even hotter and if electrical stuff gets fried then that means no electricity and no AC!!

simular sh*t happened in NY in 2004 and other states. The heat fried sh*t up somethin serious and they werent prepared and it put a blackout for some days. Ill never forget that ....I walked across the bridge from work from manhattan 57 th st. people were trippin. it was like a movie.

But anyway as far as saturns "vanishing" rings go i read & saw a video why it "Looks" like the rings are dissappearing. Well they always been there but its just (in our earths view) the planet is shifting at a straight angle. more n more so that it looks (to us from earth) like nothin is there. Rings are spinin so fast ya cant see that. But there is a wonder about that though....and meteors as far as im concerned...long story short if ya throw a basket ball in water and then spin it "straight on your finger" wouldnt some of that water spash in your direction??

i mean man listen if that happens we are toast man. If anything strikes the moon hard enough and Jacks that up we are toast. The moon Controls the waves on how close it gets to the earth with all the gravity etc etc. I didnt learn that till like the late 90s and early 2000 er so ...Its jacked up. The even made a movie on that from The outer limits.
