Double Character Portraits apearing as One
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:49:17 AM »
So I've been wondering for quite some time- (+did a few g00gle/yoUtube searches- but to no avail)

Is it possible to have two separate portrait images represent a single character's portrait image in the character select screen. Essentially the focus being ANTI-dither/ colour loss For a VERRY large image. 2 seperate images would provide double the standard pallete slots and appear as one when aligned correctly therein yielding great benefit. (And yes- I'm very fluid in Photoshop- but depending on the coloure diversity and size of the image there is only so much that can be done. I'm toying with a screenpack design I would verry much like to see monopolize this technique- if one such exists at all.

My most humble thanx!

I don't know man, I've made countless portraits using really large images. Just hold shift when you resize them, and adjust the levels of the image, and you shouldn't really experience any or close to no colorloss. When something is that small though, there's not much you can do to protect it's quality 100%. I'm saying all this assuming I understand what you are asking. It is possible to have 2 images be a portrait though, but it would actually just be one big portrait.

Here's a screenshot of some of my portraits. Do mine have the dither/colorloss that you are experiencing? Just curious.

I guess it might be kind of hard to tell since I used a jpeg darnit.

Well I guess my problem (probably should have stated it in the 1st post) is that my char ports would (if God willing) appear to be roughly 500x500 pixels- which I know is HUGE. Obscenely HUGE. -at-least for mugen ports. Useless and a waste- except for that I have a very specific design application that I think would 0WN!!!

Essentially I would like to create the illusion of a "scrolling" char select screen- as opposed to the typical scrolling cursor based screen. If my tactic were usable it wouldn't be the cursor moving to select characters; it would be the screen itself.
...Not sure if that makes sense- but the idea is for me at least that once I start dealing with images over about 500x200 I start hitting massive saturation. (Does depend on the image though)- but on average so to speak.

Hence the vitality of dual images serving to appear as one. 250x250+250x250=WIN

And  :D 4 the record your ports look fantastic! Not an ounce of saturation as far as I can tell, soo.. yeah, moral of the story; REALLY BIG IMAGES-that's the problem
 >:D

Thanks man, I'm glad you like them. I could send them all to you if you want them. Like I said, I did a bunch of different packs so you'll be set as far as standard portraits go. About your problem, that does sound like it would be a tricky one. If you truly mean have a scrolling character select screen though, that would be easy and just require some code changing in the system.def. I'm pretty sure that's not what you mean though, cause that would only apply to the select screens background and not the portraits themselves. That does sound like a cool idea though if I'm correctly seeing in my head what you explained. Kind of like on street fighter 2 when you are going to the next opponent, how the globe moves and not the cursor? I could be wrong about that being SF2 though, that's just what I remember it being. Maybe you could try sending me one of the images you are talking about, and I could try to mess with it the way I do it, and see if it comes out the same way, just to see.  :-??

Edit:
Wati, I missed a key thing you said. I'm pretty sure you can't have two images as two different portraits that lay on top of each other like you said. I'm sure it could be done by individually coding something like that into each character, but I think it would involve a little more than expected, but I don't know that for sure. I couldn't help you with that one man, sorry.

Yeah, well either way, thanx alot for your support & time. & yeah- I can't remember if it was SF2 either but I'm pretty sure you're right. Basically that sounds like the nature of my idea only with the character slot/selectors maintaining a certain location on the globe, so your "cursor" is technically never moving. I've never heard of or seen that done in mugen- so figured coding it that way would be nill to slim- while perhaps persueing the same effect from a graphical standpoint only requiring the use  of dual char ports would be the wiser decision consideing my current codeing skillz = FAIL
 :cool

but yeah, if you have a moment free and are willing 2 send me some of your char packs that would be awesome!!!  :w00t:

& once again, thanks alot!
 :)

It still might be able to be done though, I just don't know how to do it myself. Good luck on pulling it off, I'm sure it's just a matter of time. I'll send you the portraits here shortly too.
