Help opening CMD files
« on: August 26, 2009, 02:25:51 PM »
I just re formatted my PC and reinstalled XP with service pack 3. I back my mugen up on a DVD and then re copied it onto my HDD after installation of windows. Now when I go to a characters folder to edit a CMD file, it doesn't allow me to open it. Usually the CMD file looks like a window with a little yellow cog or gear in it. Now they look like file types Windows hasn't determined what program to open them with. Usually you can right click and select open then windows will ask you what program do you want to open that file with. But now the file just gets transparent when I double click on it.

Usually you just right click and select edit but that option isn't even there.

Could someone help me with this?

yes I am. Normally it will automatically open with notepad when I right click the file and select edit. But it doesn't give me that option. I know a way around it, I can open notepad and then drag the file in notepad but it's cumbersome. I would rather do it like i used it.

Windows used to display the files as the little window with the gold cog in the center. It doesn't do that anymore

Try opening it with fighter factory.

Try opening it with fighter factory.

that works the same way as dropping the CMD into notepad but it's not working like it should. I should be able to right click on the CMD and then edit. But Windows doesn't allow me to do so.

I got it working. This is for anyone who might run into this stupid problem.......

You have to associate the file extension "CMD" with a file type. So basically you're creating an extension for windows to recognize.

open explorer (not IE, but something like "my computer") and click "tools" and then "folder options" and then click "file types" then click "new"

in the file extension box, type in "CMD". Then click the "advanced" button. There should be a drop down box, click it and select "windows NT command script" then click ok, then apply and the problem is solved. I wonder why MS blocked this out in Service Pack 3???
