MUGEN's commercial use?
« on: June 24, 2009, 05:47:20 PM »
Curious about using MUGEN for commercial use. Not stealing anybody's characters and selling them on eBay, nothing like that. I was thinking along the lines of wholly original content developed with the sole purpose of being commercial. Is it illegal to use the platform for this purpose?

But make a game and relese it, well not unless you can get electbite's ok, cuz with every screen pack its still going to have that beta mark on it. If you made a lot of money you'd probly get t3h lawsuit from them.

Technically, you could as long as what ever you released was 100% created from scratch by you (sprites, code, sounds, music, fonts, etc) AND was a completely original concept (i.e. not something based off of anyone else's work).

You CANNOT include any of the actual MUGEN program files with your releases if it is for a commercial purpose. So that means you can do individual chars, stages, lifebars, etc, but NOT full-games moleboxed with the MUGEN exe.

So technically, yes you can charge money if you keep these things covered. But that doesn't mean anyone will actually PAY you. It would have to be something pretty spectacular to get anyone to shell out cash for a MUGEN creation, and even then some @$$#0|3 will put it on esnips.

There's a reason no one has done this.

Possibly. A completely original content is okay. However, since Elecbyte is alive, you need permission from them to use it.

They are developing a new MUGEN for windows that no longer uses the characters that we have created for the Windows MUGEN hack. If I were in their shoes I would say no to your permission, since MUGEN is fanart.

You really don't believe me.

They're really alive...really.

You might want to go to Wikipedia, they updated their MUGEN article a few days ago, and there's proof that they're alive.

The proof comes from whois.net. whois has a policy with their stuff (Read the bold for more information). However, Just because I think Elecbyte is alive doesn't mean I fully believe it, since whois isn't 100% accurate. Although written as a fake, let's hope that Elecbyte is really here.

That doesn't count. DC was Reu's own character, so he can sell his character on shirts and mugs.

In any case that's outside the scope of selling an original mugen product.
Punctuation and capitalization can make the difference between "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse," and, "I helped my uncle jack off a horse."

92% of people have moved onto rap. If you're part of the 8% who thinks rap isn't music, sucks to be you.

Most newer stuff sucks, though.

^^(PM)^

I also read that you have to have Elecbyte's permission, but sadly they're not alive.
Also you can't use edits and characters/stages/lifebars from other games. That backs up the quote.

The cake is a PIe!

Bleh. Totally forgot something. The only person that I know who was a part of Elecbyte goes under the name of dirt. He runs a site called monkey.org but apparently they're all in "hypnosis". That could probably prove that Elecbyte isn't alive anymore since no one didn't get a response back from dirt.

Dang. But we have ShugenDo, I'm going to love that one.
