Spriting Discussion
« on: January 21, 2009, 01:32:19 PM »
With O Ilusionista's new project, next year's EOH, and the new sprite of the week contest popping up,I figured we could use a topic to discuss spriting styles and things like that.

Try not to use this topic to bash specific creator's work's, but more to discuss bases, shading techniques, trends, and things like that.

I'll start with a 'mini topic'.

Covering the Bases
If I had to guess, I'd say Cable, Cyclops, and Captain America are among the most used bases for MVC style characters (oh yeah, and Megaman, but we all know why that is).

Not sure why, I guess they're all pretty versatile. I'm sure Cap's boots and gloves have something to do with it.  :D

What do you guys think are some underused bases? I'd like to try editing or using parts from a few of the characters from Rage of the Dragons sometime, you don't see that too often.

you know what id really like to see is a character whos base is juggernaut, to my knowledge there hasnt been a single character with that base and that in itself would be a real challenge.

I myself find im starting to use Urien allot more, and I like Hayato, but he can be a pain to convert.
Ive been trying to shy away from using bases like cap too much.  He's rather buff, and dosnt fit usualy for stuff i see him used for. But cap has some pritty good movements though.

The real trick is mixing bases arround in one sprite, and having to manualy resize sprites to fit a body.

I have this one project i keep moving to the back burner, its a hayato edit but because its not a sword user i have to mix in some other parts, so im mixing in bits of Fei-Long from alpha, i have to expand the size of his arms to match hayato's by just pulling them apart a few pixils and filling the gaps. Can be difficult at times.

I'm guessing you mean that super hero guy.  ;)

probably a bit too much of a challenge. I've seen him used for a Hulkbuster Ironman. It looked a little strange, but it kinda worked.

In my opinion the Megaman base is used too easily sometimes.

Take a look at my avatar. Did you notice its base was Megaman? That's how you can use your bases as well. Of course it had a lot of tweak work, and I ended up just using the feet, but still, Megaman was the base.

Then again, never mention you are using Megaman as a base, as people sometimes tend to be suddenly able to see that it's a Megaman base.

Because, It's Midnite

Actually, Juggy can be used for certain characters, you just have to think about it. I know a few characters he could be used as a base for. Sure he is huge, but his bulk just fits certain characters or certain types. But most people don't think of using him because they stick to smaller framed characters.

You know.....I rarely actually use bases for my spriting, save for a few special occasions (and of course, for my hi-res Touhou sprites which are around here somewhere....). Though the bases I DID use, were other MBs for my MBs (like for Sion, I used MBed Shiki, while for Kagome and Mina, I used MBed Iori's legs (and hands in the case of Kagome). It just depends on what works I guess, though I try to shy away from using bases TOO much unless I'm stuck (like I am with my Mina shock sprite......then again, NO base is gonna save me there I think ^^;;).

I knew that was megaman  ;)

I don't really like Caps shading either .

normally i just create a fighting stance by frankenspriting a little bit, then drawing in the rest with the photoshop pencil, one pixel at a time...which takes forever. before that all i ever did was frankensprite, now i almost never do that.

As of late, I use a minimum of two bases for any given sprite now, if not three. Just to give it a more unique feel. My favorite build to use now is the mix of Urien/Cable now for your regular type sized heroes like Bats, and I'm putting this mix to good use on someone. The legs I'll change up quite a bit though since there's people like Cap/Cyclops who have very similar legs. I do try to stay away from the overused bases for the most part though.

For girls, I think it's a lot easier to mix up bases, honestly. Guys come of all sizes, but girls from most fighting games tend to mostly stick to a certain frame, so it's easier to mix and match for them IMO.

The hardest things for me to sprite would probably have to be any type of machinery or animal.

I do like to use CvS bases a lot as of late. Even though they're usually smaller compared to other fighting games they're still great bases.

Anyways, that's my two cents. :)

We stopped checking for monsters under our bed when we realized they were inside of us.

Those are hard to draw on paper, too.
