Apparently in the Terminator series, the entire human race does depend on John Connor.
This is what the future would be like if the TX had terminated John and Kate

It's a level from T3: Redemption

Basically instead of TX reprogramming you, she sends you into the future using a primitive time machine, and after that she terminates John and Kate, while you get sent to a alternate future where humans are extinct, and the terminators run an empire on the world, and you fight your way to the time displacement machine to go back to 2004 and continue your mission.

Man, I would hate to live in this kind of future. .

The TX can remote control any machine via remote control... So it's not going to help if Tech-Com uses machines, and emps only take out a terminator for 90 seconds (according to the tv series). So apparently John in the Terminator films really is the last hope for humans.
