[STAGE] NES Videogame stages (Update: 06-12-2007)
« on: November 29, 2007, 09:11:36 AM »
Butter Building
Version 1.1

Anyone remember that very cool level (for its time) in Kirby's Adventure? The one where Nintendo used a certain technique to render "3D" in a NES game? Of course, they cheated by using animated tiles, but who cares? It was cool back then.

Butter Building was the third world in Kirby's Adventure, and the first occurance of the rotating tower was in stage two of that world.

This stage has been upsized to fit most of the fighting game characters, although they won't actually fit well. But it's the thought that counts, and that stage was one of the cooler stages of Kirby's Adventure.

The Mushroom Kingdom
Version 0.9

Straight from Super Mario Bros., this stage has been done many times, on many different types of project, one including MUGEN. But what did you expect from the first level of one of the most popular games in history?

This is one of the first projects I've started, but it already is kind of impressive for a first stage.

Airship
Version 0.5

One of the most memorable levels in Super Mario Bros. 3 were the airship stages. In fact, the airships were popular enough to be featured in later Mario games, like Mario Kart DS and Super Mario Galaxy.

Now you can play on the Airship yourself!

Very nice indeed! Do you plan on making other NES related stages?

Yes, but not until I've got my current projects done. As you might notice, Airship isn't really done, it's missing a proper background. But in the next version, it's been taken care of.

A guy told me one time, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."

Nah. Once I get to fix a movement synchronization issue and the stage enters final state, it's free to be put on your own site (I'm not going to be too anal about that). Of course, with credits (or at least without the readme removed).

I originally created it because I thought, hey, that technique used in some stages to give the illusion of 3D is quite cool. Then I decided to enter it in a Stage Wars event held on a certain forums (which coincidentally also was a site for Stepmania, something I loved to do). So eventually, I added these craptacular characters in the background, and added a few Shotzo (using the windowing technique).

I often try to implement techniques I discover and learn from people, just to practice it on stages. That's why you won't see that much stages from me (asides from the fact that I'm lazy as hell).

But if you have any suggestions for NES based stages, I'd preferably do Nintendo-owned games, since I can draw inspiration from other games in the franchise as well.

Thanks!

Anyway, I've been trying to go with some suggestions for Airship (trying to fix an issue with the bounds which caused an infinite for a certain characters), and it's coming out nicely now:

However, I'm not sure if the clouds are giving issues here, both technical-wise as well as cosmetic. First of all, does it look okay at the moment?

The clouds look like little floating bubbles... Also shouldn't they be thicker when they're closer to the screen?

I'd love to see you make a Subcon stage.

Me too :D

About the bubb-I mean, cloud shapes, I can't really fix that, since I only upsized it from the original background tiles. I could try to unbubble the clouds, but that's it.

About the thickness, I could do that, but only at moments when I'm not lazy :P

But anyway, thanks for the comments guys. I'll try to do something with it.

Well, the clouds could look more like... clouds! The airships in the back are great!
You could make some Castlevania and Megaman Stages, they would be great!

I know, my bro noticed that too.

Anyway, I do have an idea how to change the clouds, but the changes would just be small.

What about using those smiling clouds from World 4 in SMB3?

I already found better clouds in World 5 of Super Mario Bros. 3.

EDIT:

Shows the intro test for this stage.

The intro and the clouds look nice but I would personally keep the clouds in the background.  Or maybe also have a large, transparent cloud with a smilie (angry?) face float across the screen every so often.

My MUGEN site.
Honestly, people need to stop using 4Shared.

I could make a "cloudless version", but I wont, since it actually makes more sense with the clouds :P

See, the airships are often high in the sky, mostly above the clouds. I wanted this one to fly just over the clouds, to give it a more epic feeling. It's like, that moment when you see the Flying Dutchman rise for the first time in the Pirates 2 movie. Doesn't matter how crappy the movie was, that scene just felt epic.

That, or I'm confusing it with another movie.

I've uploaded the current version now, since I didn't want to keep these changes from people.

EDIT: Oh, and it may sound a little cocky, but I'd love to see any of my stages in MUGEN videos :P

Especially Butter Building. That stage needs love.

By the way, added a basic version to Butter Building, if you didn't like the sprites in the background.
