Fyro's Sonic Generations Review!
« on: December 05, 2011, 02:18:31 PM »
Yay, my first review (in general) in such a long time. But haven't really written about any game/movie because there wasn't really anything I wanted to talk about. Sonic Generations changed that, but I guess it's because I'm a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Before I talk about it, I want to say that ever since Sonic Heroes I have felt that my blue childhood hero has been through so much torture. I pretty much only enjoyed the Gameboy Advanced games. The RPG "Sonic Chronicles" was... so so. And that's considering I love RPG's. I also enjoyed Sonic Shuffle. But games that were about speed and platforming, such as Sonic the hedgehog 1, 2 and 3, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog 06, Sonic Unleashed... I only enjoyed up to SA2. Out of doubt and fear, I have not yet tried Sonic Colors, though I heard many good thing about it. But, on to the topic at hand... Sonic Generations.

This game took all the best stages and put it into one game and made them awesome-er. I absolutely love it. People may argue, and I've heard it: "There's nothing new." Not true. These stages were all based off of previous games, but they've been renewed. I don't want to say done better, because they were already good to begin with. Just... awesome-er.

There's a few things I'm alittle "eh" about, but I don't mind it one bit since it's not game play related.
Spoiler for those that haven't played it yet. Don't see who, though. Hm. :p You know who you are. haha

Game play wise, I don't find anything to complain about. I only beat the game so far, I haven't tried if there's a way to turn Super Sonic during the stages. But there's a skill available for that. Which, btw, I haven't used ANY of the skills. o.O

Oh! On that note, about Super Sonic:

Anyway, for future Sonic games, I really really hope they follow this formula. I know there's gotta be something different, but this one was perfect. Robotnik was up to something, and Sonic was there to the rescue. I really hope they don't make him go through such a down fall again.

What are your thoughts, for those that have played it?

To be fair, Heroes wasn't outright horrible, it had some good level ideas and I liked the large number of playable characters, but I will agree with you about the post Adventure games (especially Shadow, I know 06 is considered the worst but Shadow's the one I hate the most). Also I find Sonic Battle incredibly underrated (granted it suffers from repetition but then again, don't most fighting games/beat em' ups?)

I haven't gotten Generations yet (one of the first games I plan to get when I get before the season's over) but from what I've seen I absolutely love it. Classic's levels could use only a tinge bit more work but it's probably the closest we'll ever get to a good ol' (official) Classic gameplay experience (I haven't seen the 3DS one but from what I heard I think it's a saving grace that I didn't). I also think the Modern gameplay is the best we've had since Adventure 2. I'm just blown away with how the level designs for the Modern sections are (especially Sky Sanctuary) My only disappointment with it is the story: It's not bad or anything but it missed a lot, a LOT, of good joke opportunities. And I would have loved to see more scenes of Sonic and Tails sharing their thoughts about the levels (they only do this for Green Hill and Chemical Plant), mainly because I've really grown to like the new Sonic voice cast (anyone who disses Roger Craig Smith as Sonic can GTFO) and, without giving away the ending, I think Mike Pollock gives off his best Eggman performance ever.

It's also a bit on the short side, kinda like Colors. But the side missions and the online play help extend it's playtime (especially the 30-sec trials, I've seen a LOT of those popping up on the Tube)

So I would say it's worth the money. Happy 20th Birthday Sonic (I feel so old now  :'( )

That, I've never been Sonic fan, but I liked this game. Yeah, repeating, but I liked collecting and customizing a lot

I thought the game was good, but really much too short and I found the controls unresponsive at times. But other then that it was a good game, I even liked it more than skyward sword, best zelda game my butt.

Oh yeah IDK whay he was mute either he spoke in cd, they shoulda got erkil to voice him lol.

I don't get why people were so shocked about Classic Sonic not speaking. It was one of the first things announced about the game

It may have been annouced, but that doesn't mean it makes sense. Especially considering he talks in CD:

I must of missed it. Especially since I decided to keep myself in the dark until I had it in my hands. :p

I mean full on dialog. Not Mario-esque shouts.

To be fair mario never spoke in 2D and what game back in those days had full dialog? Anyway the point is, classic tails could talk but not sonic? Tails never spoke once in a 2d game. Besides classic sonic is sonic from the PAST not some alternate dimension or anything like that, what the instant he got to a certain  age he could just talk?

Maybe he was shy? I dunno. What's wrong with Classic being a silent protagonist?
