Policing the Internet, abusively.
« on: March 11, 2011, 02:33:29 PM »
I know, I know I'm going to choked out and bashed by you guys for posting this, but I don't give a damn anymore!

Breaking news: Demand Progress has obtained documents that reveal a radical shift in how law enforcement is policing the Internet.

We were already been told about Brian McCarthy, who ran a website that linked to various sites where you could watch online streams of TV shows and sports networks. A couple months ago, the government seized his domain name and on Friday they arrested him and charged him with criminal copyright infringement -- punishable by five years in prison.

You and 35,000 other Americans have signed our petition demanding that the government back off:  Will you help spread word of the government's abusive web policing?  Click here to foward the petition to your friends -- It'll only take a few seconds.

They just dug up the government's complaint, and it reveals that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) don't even allege that McCarthy made a copy of anything! Just that his site linked to various sites with copyrighted material. Under that sort of thinking, everyone who's sent around a link to a copyrighted YouTube video is a criminal.

This is another shocking overreach by DHS and ICE: They need to push back -- and fast -- before they try to lock up more Americans.

Will you click here to forward the petition to your friends via Facebook, Twitter, or email?  We need to make sure that DHS and ICE know that we're watching, and are disgusted by their abusive policing of the Internet.

Thanks for fighting back.

I don't know. I'm not an American but I really support this kind of idea. Unfortunately, I'm not sure of signing up. It's really bad news. :( Man, what's wrong with "policing the internet"? Do they not care about users, but themselves? I have a strange feeling about those guys.

Took me awhile to realise what you meant.

At first, I was expecting this to be restricting access to certain websites, but from what I've heard, this is just purely for linking to copyrighted material.

I always knew it.  The USA is becoming a totalitarian state, and no, I'm not saying that "them leftist Socialist sonovaguns" are responsible.  It's the power of the few, and in this case, corporations that use government agencies to carry out their deeds.  A totalitarian capitalist state, if you will.
