The Smart Palette is the base color separation from which anyone who whats to create a color palette for a character will start from. Using a smart palette, it enables you to not only create different colors for a character, but also essentially change the design of clothes of the character as well.
Take for example Acey's Astonishing Beast WIP.
Note: all five of those are from the same character. Acey sectioned the color scheme into various smaller pieces which allows for a bigger variation of design, more so than just changing the colors.
Ok, here's the base palette. I blew it up so you can understand it better:
Now, each of the the parts that share the same color are linked of course, but as you can see, there are many more parts to manipulate. Example, fill the glasses and his face the same color, and he'll have no glasses on that palette. Fill the undersuit the same color as his fur and he'll just be wearing the X on that palette. Fill the colors of his gauntlets the same color as the fur and he won't be wearing them on that pallete. You can even just fill the trim on the gauntlets. It makes for a more dynamic character, especially if you want you create custom abilities to palettes.
