how do assume control over cpu controled teammate with MVC tag patch?

how do you take control over your cpu controled teammate.  I tried the holding down of control and 3 but it doesn't work.  When do you hold it down?  Also i'm using hires MVC2 screen pack if that makes a differnce of when I hold it down

please help

u press it when is say ready or in that time range before the lifebars say fight

thanks is there anyway to change that like in a cmd or something.
like change to press space bar whenever?
