Poison's first appearance is in Final Fight as a minor enemy and part of the game's main villain group Mad Gear. She tended to be one of Capcom's most controversial characters. The game had a penchant for palette swaps, and the character Roxy was hers. In initial game design both characters were biologically female. However, Capcom of Japan received a phone call from a Nintendo rep opposing violence against women, so the developers changed them into pre-op transsexuals (more specifically stated as newhalves), but without changing the in-game sprites [1]. This is stated in the game's Japanese instruction manual for the character's backstory.[2], and reflected in the very male "knockout moans" characters make as they are defeated. However, US playtesters failed to realize they were actually male until a representitive of Capcom Japan informed them of such.[3] Despite this, Nintendo felt that the female enemies should be censored, and they were replaced with generic characters Billy and Sid (while Poison and Roxy both have at least some backstory, these two have none and exist solely as filler characters).

Amen. In the SNES Final Fight version, where Guy is not available, those punks Billy and Sid show up. In the Final Fight Guy version, where there is no Cody, Roxy and Poison show up. As Cody was to be the "hero" of the story I suppose it would have been wrong for him to beat up Roxy and Poison.

Capcom originally made Poison a girl then some company or something said they have a problem with guys beating up girls so they forced Capcom to make Poison a guy. Capcom's original intentions was for Poison to be a girl, so to me it's a girl.

well i guess its wrong for guys to beat up girls on fighting games too anyways the thought of him being transexual makes it impossible to think he is a girl. though on the other hand he looks to much like a girl to be a transexual.

The whole controversy behind Poison doesn't bother me. I don't think it matters whether she is a man or a woman or in this case a transexual. She's an interesting character and I still think she's cool, besides she's too hot looking to be a man.............I can't believe I just said that,but I think of her as a girl. The whole story behind her is a bit confusing though for sure.

I don't think there was a girl in SF1 but SF2 released shortly after that Final Fight game. Then that game started a trend in gaming which was 2d fighting, at that time, nobody cared anymore.

When Final Fight was ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, an American playtester working for Capcom reviewed the content during the localization process with one of the Japanese designers, andr objected to the protagonist hitting females. The designer pointed that the "female" enemies were actually transvestites; thus Poison and Roxy were replaced with regular male punks named "Billy" and Sid" in the English localization of the home version.[26] This change has been repeated with every English port to Nintendo consoles, including the Game Boy Advance version Final Fight One[27] and the Wii's virtual console.[28]

English versions of the Sega CD port censored the characters too but in a different manner. Both were redrawn with a longer shirt and shorts, and the under-cleavage shown when the characters are struck was covered up.[

Ok... I've never played this game but I know how Capcom works, and this is what I think happend, Poison(along with all the other chicks) where originally ment to be women, but nintendo did not like that so they got Capcom to change it, Capcom being the lazzy sprite bastards they are, didn't bother making them dudes by respriting them, they anounced him as transexuals, witch is kinda ironic, telling the youngins it's okay to be a transexual but not to hit women! Later on, the where replaced by Billy and Sid, well that's my 2 cents!

Edit: Forgot to say, I don't give a f**k if she's a dude or a women, she's made up, she looks hella hawt, and she was origianlly ment to be a chick, so I still think of HER the same!
