Drugs In US Tap Water

Officials in Philadelphia say testing there discovered 56
pharmaceuticals or byproducts in treated drinking water.

(AP) -- A vast array of pharmaceuticals -- including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones -- have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

To be sure, the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose. Also, utilities insist their water is safe.

But the presence of so many prescription drugs -- and over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen -- in so much of our drinking water is heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health.

In the course of a five-month inquiry, the AP discovered that drugs have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas -- from Southern California to Northern New Jersey, from Detroit, Michigan, to Louisville, Kentucky.

interpret the information" and might be unduly alarmed.

How do the drugs get into the water?

People take pills. Their bodies absorb some of the medication, but the rest of it passes through and is flushed down the toilet. The wastewater is treated before it is discharged into reservoirs, rivers or lakes. Then, some of the water is cleansed again at drinking water treatment plants and piped to consumers. But most treatments do not remove all drug residue.

And while researchers do not yet understand the exact risks from decades of persistent exposure to random combinations of low levels of pharmaceuticals, recent studies -- which have gone virtually unnoticed by the general public -- have found alarming effects on human cells and wildlife.

A 'growing concern'

"We recognize it is a growing concern and we're taking it very seriously," said Benjamin H. Grumbles, assistant administrator for water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Members of the AP National Investigative Team reviewed hundreds of scientific reports, analyzed federal drinking water databases, visited environmental study sites and treatment plants and interviewed more than 230 officials, academics and scientists.

I trust bottled water even less than tap. At least there's no misconceptions with tap water.

Im a PUR water filter faithful. I use the filter on the sink and use the picture with filters in the fridge. US water might not be as disgusting as other countries but this is still a surprise. I honestly dont care to shower knowing that if you flush the toilet the temperature differs cuz that shows an obvious link in the plumbing system. On the other hand though, Im not gonna walk around funky all day either.

Yeah... You wouldn't be saying that if the rivers in your area were dark green.
At least when I drink bottled water, I can see through it.
This might sound weird at first, but I think there are people that dump corpses and tons of illegal objects in the rivers.  ???
I mean a river that green just isn't natural.

Tap water and bottled water are both purified anyway. But, from what I understand, Tap is slightly less purified with more regulations, but bottled water is slightly more purified (but not pure) with less regulations, and is also a ripoff.

you can chose not to drink the water because of drugs but it dosent matter. All most everything is made of somthing that is sapposed to b nontoxic  but when they combined they make by-product from chemical reactions that could be protently bad for you. Can foods have things that like femine hormones so do some plastic bottles. Non stick skilets have perfluorooctanic acid. Shampoo, make-up, nail polish, tv's, microwaves, your clothes.  Not only do you absorb the ink in ur new shirt if its stain prof u got another problem.

With the water its only good if it come from a spring or some natrual source but . . . .. No water is fully pure cuz that the reason y there drugs in r water. They cant filter out that stuff. As for the Filter u use on ur sink and in that pitcher it helps but cant elliminate everthing.  :|

Dont beleave Rage check the net . . . . . chicago sun times did a article on this. Fox did the water. :|
